Monday Night Softball!

Teams get together on Monday nights for men's competitive, slow pitch softball!

On Monday nights, players compete at Bi-Centennial Field in Livonia, in men's competitive, slow pitch softball.  Games start at 6:00 P.M., and are on a 1 hour time limit, so 5 innings are usually completed.  Games are high scoring, and a big, bright scoreboard located in the outfield lets everyone know the situation, and status of each game.  Routine fly balls are not always routine, but when mistakes are made, there doesn't appear to be the negative ragging of teammates that you may find in other competitive sports.  Several teams compete throughout the night, and many players hang around after the game to engage in chit chat, and non-alcoholic beverages.  Several fans that are not affiliated with either team, enjoy attending Monday night games.  It's common for teams to score in the double digits, and it's ordinary to see more then ten runs per inning.  Combine that with inside the park home runs, and no such thing as a guaranteed play, and you have a game that is entertaining to watch, and easy to follow for any level sports fan.
Bi-Centennial Field is located off of 7 mile road, near Wayne road, in Livonia.  It is a spacious park featuring several well maintained baseball, and softball fields, tennis courts, soccer fields, and trails for jogging, or walking the dog.  The softball field shown in the photos is 300 feet to straight away centerfield.
There are different softball leagues, for all different kinds of softball.  If your interested in playing softball, it is important to find a league that is right for your skill level, and your desire to compete.  There is men's softball, women's softball, and co-ed softball.  There are competitive leagues, along with non-competitive beer leagues.  There is slow pitch softball, fast pitch softball, and moderate pitch softball. Finally, there are softball leagues in almost every city, and with the price of gas it is smart to find a softball league that is close to you.
Do you know of a softball team, or a softball league that you would like to see covered on the Mitten State Sports Report?  Email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com

Games are high scoring, and not every play is routine!

Rifle River Hidden Entrance!

There are several public entrances to the Rifle River!  Some entrances are more well known then others!

The last few posts have displayed a couple of the popular, and more well known public entrances to the Rifle River.  The Rifle River High Banks, and the Rifle River Pipeline Park are used by most of the tourists to access the river for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing.  There is another entrance that is unadvertised, and somewhat hidden, and is known by the locals as the Kenneth Drive entrance.  Hidden down a side street (Kenneth), this public entrance features a parking area, and steps right into the water.  Even on a windy afternoon, the current is still calm at this entrance, and the park itself is very quiet, and less frequently visited.  The park has been dedicated to Harold R. Kleinert (1923-2009) who was the founder of the Rifle River Watershed Restoration Committee!  There will be no photo album accompanying this post, but scroll down to check out more pictures of the park.  Be sure to check out all of the Mitten State Sports Report's archived material. Leave a comment or email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com

Rifle River Pipeline Park

The Rifle River Pipeline Park is a public entrance to the Rifle River!

Earlier this week I posted an article, and photos of the Rifle River High Banks entrance to the Rifle River.  Approximately a half mile south of the High Banks is the Rifle River Pipeline Park.  The Pipeline entrance has about half as many steps down to the water as the High Banks, and the current here is very strong on a windy day.  There is no railing along side the stairs for your small boat, but many people use the Pipeline entrance for fishing, and tubing. There is a place to rest near the midway point, but don't forget the bug spray, or the mosquitos will eat you alive. The Rifle River Pipeline got it's name because of the Pipeline that runs over, and across the river (as seen in the photo above).  The Rifle River Pipeline is located in Mills Township, off of Rifle River road.

Rifle River High Banks

The Rifle River High Banks entrance offers two public entrances to the water!

The Rifle River High Banks sits across from Lake Ogemaw!

The Rifle River High Banks is located off of Rifle River Road, just south of M-55!

There is a spot to rest, along with a trail that leads to another entrance to the water!

There is a lookout point with a great view high above the Rifle River!

There are 88 steps that lead you to the river!  There is a rail along the side for your small boat!

There is mud, and muck at the bottom of the main entrance! The alternate entrance takes you directly into the water!

88 Steps To Water!

The Rifle River High Banks entrance has 88 steps, and a place for your small boat along the side!

The Rifle River stretches throughout the Ogemaw County area, and runs through Mills Township, West Branch and several other cities in Mid Michigan.  There are several public entrances that are used to access the Rifle River for flat boat fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing.  Some of these public entrances are more well known by the locals then others.  The Rifle River High Banks entrance is located off of Rifle River Road, just south of M-55.  The Rifle River High Banks entrance has 88 steps, and a place for your small boat along the side.  Near the half way point is a resting area with a bench, and a trail that leads to another entrance to the water.  The trail has a lookout point which is placed high above the water, and offers a breathtaking view of the Rifle River. The other entrance also has a rail for your small boat, and leads directly into the water.  This entrance doesn't have all of the muck at the bottom like the main entrance does.   If you use the Rifle River High Banks entrance don't forget to bring the bug spray, and if you go canoeing on a windy day, be advised that the current at this entrance is very strong.

The second entrance leads directly into the water!

Mystery Bridge in West Branch?

Go from nowhere to nowhere in West Branch!

In the city of West Branch, off of Interstate 75, is a mystery bridge of sorts that will take you from nowhere to nowhere in a hurry.  Located approximately 50 feet off of the highway, the bridge serves a limited purpose for a very limited amount of people.  Although the population in West Branch has continued to rise since 2000, and businesses in the area have continued to flourish, some construction projects just make you ask why?  The Victorian style businesses in the downtown area of West Branch continue to draw tourism, and the Tanger Outlet located just north of the downtown area has recently grown, along with the area known by the locals as "Hamburger Hill".  The mystery bridge however, sits in between these two sections of the city, located in a remote section off of the Interstate.
I have no idea who paid for the bridge, but it makes me wonder if more urgent matters in West Branch could have been addressed with the money, and resources used to build this mystery bridge.  Leave a comment or email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com  Scroll down and check out more pictures of the mystery bridge in West Branch!  Scroll down and vote in the Local Wrestling Virtual Tournament!  Click on June and read all about it!

Ogemaw Hills Bike Week!

Last week was "Bike Week" in Ogemaw Hills!

Last week was "Bike Week" in Ogemaw Hills, and the city of West Branch, along with the entire Ogemaw County area was transformed into a riders paradise with events throughout the week accommodating hundreds of bikers that attended this years event.  Bikers braved the heat wave that struck Ogemaw County last week including over 100 degree temperatures, a power outage on Friday that spread throughout the West Branch area, and violent thunderstorms with strong winds, and heavy rain.  Bikers camped out at the Ogemaw County Fairgrounds (pictured above, and below), but they could be seen, and heard riding throughout the Ogemaw County area.
Several events took place all week long at "Bike Week", and the public was treated to a free "Super Stunt Show" on Friday night in the city of West Branch.  Some of the other events included 5 separate performances by the "Ives Brothers Stunt Show", bikini bull riding, a bikini contest, a bike wear contest, judged bike contests, bike races, bike shows, nightly live entertainment, and of course fireworks. Businesses in the area look forward to "Bike Week", along with the several bikers around the country that attend the yearly event.
