Fantasy Thanksgiving!

The Mitten State Sports Report has Fantasy Thanksgiving covered!

You've heard of "Fantasy Football", "Fantasy Basketball", and several other fantasy sports.  The Mitten State Sports Report has now entered the world of fantasy sports, well sort of.  On (late) Thursday night, the Mitten State Sports Report held it's first ever Fantasy Thanksgiving draft.  There were three participants, seven rounds, and rock, paper, scissors contests determined this years draft order.  My friend Leann won the first overall pick, and selected white meat turkey with the 1st overall selection.  Leann picked gravy in the 2nd round, and added turkey stuffing, and pecan pie in later rounds.  Tony (myself) selected mashed potatoes in the 1st round, and found value in the 4th round with pumpkin pie.  Pertile also selected corn on the cob in the 6th round.  My cousin Jason shocked everyone when he passed on meat, and selected dinner rolls in the 1st round.  Jason drafted spiral ham in the 3rd round after both halves of the turkey were off the table.
Scroll down to see all of the selections of this years Fantasy Thanksgiving draft.  Vote on who you think drafted the best plate.  Click on your favorite post, scroll down, and locate the poll question.  Vote in the monthly Poll Question.  Be sure to check out all of the Mitten State Sports Report's archived material.  Leave a comment, or email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com   Have a happy, and safe Thanksgiving weekend!

Indoor Soccer in Taylor!

The Taylor Sportsplex has indoor soccer leagues for different age groups, and different skill levels!

The Taylor Sportsplex in Taylor has indoor soccer leagues for different age groups, and different skill levels.  The complex has two soccer arenas, and each field has a functional scoreboard, and turf.   One arena is boarded, and is used for more serious competition, and one field is open, and not boarded.  The boarded field appears to be the better field to play on because players will often utilize the boards to bank shots, and pass the ball to teammates.
If your thinking about joining an indoor soccer league make sure you know which type of league is right for you.  The Taylor Sportsplex has an adult co-ed competitive league, an adult co-ed recreational league, a men's competitive league, a men's recreational league, and leagues for boys, and girls.

MSU + 70 = Taco

Taco Bell has renewed their partnership with the Michigan State University men's basketball team this season.  When the Spartans score 70 or more points at home, fans can show their ticket stub to one of ten local (East Lansing area) Taco Bell restaurants to earn a free taco.  It has been a MSU promotion since 2004, and there was some concern that the free taco policy would not be in place this season.  Taco Bell announced on Wednesday that the giveaway would be available this season, and fans with a valid ticket stub have until the end of the season to claim their free taco.
The Spartans are off to a strong start this season and are currently 5-0, and ranked #1 in the nation.  Michigan State rolled Virginia Tech 96-77 last night, and will face the Oklahoma Sooners tonight (9:30) as part of the "Coaches vs. Cancer Classic" in Brooklyn, New York.  The Spartans return to the Breslin Center this Friday (November 29th) to take on Mt. St. Mary's (1:00 p.m.), and  the North Carolina Tar Heels come into East Lansing on December 4th (9:00 p.m.), as part of the "Big 10-ACC Challenge."

Whalers Win 2-1 in Shootout!

Last Friday, the Plymouth Whalers (in white) defeated the Mississauga Steelheads (in blue) 2-1 in the shootout!

The Mississauga Steelheads came into Compuware Arena last Friday night, and left with a 2-1 loss in the shootout!  The game was scoreless until about five minutes into the second period when #23 Dylan Smoskowitz scored to give the Steelheads the lead.  The score was 1-0 midway through the third period, and I remember thinking to myself that I have never seen an OHL (Ontario Hockey League) game end 1-0 before.  The Whalers tied the score with just under three minutes left in the game when #20 Josh Wesley scored his first career OHL goal.  Both teams were cautious in the scoreless overtime period, and the Whalers won it in the shootout behind goals by #27 Yannick Rathgeb, #11 Connor Chatham, and #9 Zach Lorentz.  Rathgeb was credited with the game winning goal.
The Whalers lost to the Sarnia Sting 4-2 on Saturday night at Compuware Arena, and are on the road tonight to battle the Saginaw Spirit at the Dow Event Center (puck drops at 7:11 p.m.).  The Whalers are currently in fourth place in the West Division with 19 points, and an overall record of 9 wins, 13 losses, and 1 shootout loss.  Click on the links below for more information about the Ontario Hockey League, the Plymouth Whalers, or upcoming events at Compuware Arena.  Click on past months to check out archived material regarding the Plymouth Whalers.  This is the third season in a row that the Plymouth Whalers have appeared on the Mitten State Sports Report.  You can always leave a comment, and you can email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com  Be sure to check out exclusive photos from last Fridays game between the Mississauga Steelheads and the Plymouth Whalers only on the Mitten State Sports Report!

Hamilton Has LeFevour!

When I look at some of the backup quarterbacks that have seen time in the NFL (National Football League) this season, I can't believe that they're all better then Dan LeFevour!  At Central Michigan University, LeFevour broke several records, and lead the Chippewas to bowl wins in the Motor City Bowl in 2006, and the GMAC Bowl in 2010.  LeFevour was also named the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in both bowl game victories.  Although drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 6th round of the 2010 NFL Draft, LeFevour's career never took off in the NFL for whatever reason.  Lefevour also had a brief stint in Cincinnati with the Bengals (in 2010), before leaving the NFL for the CFL (Canadian Football League).
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL signed LeFevour at the beginning of last season, and the move paid off last week when LeFevour lead the Tiger-Cats to a 19-16 overtime win against the Montreal Alouettes.  LeFevour entered the game in the overtime period, and used his legs to find the endzone on a game winning (2 yard) touchdown run.  LeFevour has always been known as a dual threat at the quarterback position, which is one of the many reasons why I can't believe there isn't a spot for him in the NFL.  LeFevour is the only player in NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) history to have thrown for over 12,000 yards, and rushed for over 2,500 in a career.  The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will rely on Lefevour in some capacity in this Sunday's Eastern Final showdown against the Toronto Argonauts.  The winner will play in the 101st Grey Cup against the winner of the Western Final game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and the Calgary Stampeders.  LeFevour is currently the second leading rusher on the Tiger-Cats this season, and has rushed for 7 touchdowns.  Lefevour has also thrown 2 touchdowns this season for the Tiger-Cats.

Youngest Coach in FBS is at WMU

The youngest coach in the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) is at Western Michigan University.  P.J. Fleck is 32 years old, and is in his first season as head coach of the Western Michigan Broncos football team.  He spent the previous three seasons as the wide receiver coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and played wide receiver in college at Northern Illinois University.  It has been a rebuilding year for the football program this season, and so far the Broncos are 1-9 overall.  The Broncos have shown much improvement over the last two games scoring 31 points in a win at the University of Massachusetts, and 32 points in an overtime loss at Eastern Michigan University.  Place kicker Andrew Haldeman kicked six field goals against Eastern Michigan last Saturday, and was named National Kicker of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.  Haldeman has been the MAC (Mid-American Conference) West Special Teams Player of the Week twice this season.  Haldeman is in his sophomore campaign at Western Michigan, and is one of the many pieces in place for rebuilding the football program. The Broncos also have youth at the quarterback position with redshirt freshman Zach Terrell gaining experience with every start.  Terrell threw for a career high 348 yards against Eastern Michigan last Saturday, and helped the Broncos reach a season high 468 yards of total offense.  Western Michigan hosts arch rival Central Michigan University this Saturday (12:00) in the "Battle of the Cannon", before finishing up the season on the road against Northern Illinois on Tuesday November 26th (7:00).
The Western Michigan women soccer team won the MAC Tournament and are in the NCAA College Cup.  The Broncos will take on Marquette University tonight at 8:00 p.m.  Marquette is seeded #2 in the Tournament, and will host the Broncos in tonight's game.  For more information about the athletic program at Western Michigan University, or MAC updates click on the links below.  Click on past months to see all of the Mitten State Sports Report's archived material.

English Out! Batch Film!

Ron English was fired as the head coach of the Eastern Michigan University football team last Friday after going 11-46 during his 57 games at Eastern Michigan.  English was in his fifth season as head coach, and the Eagles were 1-8 at the time of his firing.  A locker room tirade where profanity was used was a contributing factor in the decision to let English go.  Stan Parrish was named as the Eagles interim head coach, and he had only about 18 hours to prepare for a rivalry game against Western Michigan University.  The Broncos came into Rynearson Stadium last Saturday with a 1-8 overall record, but Eastern Michigan earned the 35-32 overtime victory over Western Michigan.  Parrish is 1-0 as the head coach of the Eagles, and will finish up the season with a home game against Bowling Green on Saturday November 23rd (1:00 p.m.), followed by a season finale road game against Central Michigan on Saturday November 29th.
NFL Films recently released a special entitled "Portraits of Pride" profiling Eastern Michigan Alumni Charlie Batch, and his charity work in the city of Pittsburg.  Charlie's "Best of the Batch Foundation" will be the focal point of the film, and it can be seen on the NFL Network on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.  Check your local listings for replays of the film.  Click on the links below for more information about the "Best of the Batch Foundation.

The Mitten State Sports Report has continued to earn over 2,000 views per month on a consistent basis for several months in a row.  It was during the month of June when the Mitten State Sports Report began to see an increase in the number of views that this publication receives.  By the time that July rolled around, the Mitten State Sports Report was receiving over 2,000 views a month.  In the last 30 days, the Mitten State Sports Report has received 2,395 views from all around the world, and the number will hopefully continue to rise.  The highest monthly total came in August when the Mitten State Sports Report received 2,400 views.  Although the number has continued to fluctuate, the amount of views per month has remained above 2,000 (since the start of July).
At the beginning of August the total number of views received was just over 8,000.  Today (November 12th), the Mitten State Sports Report has been clicked on over 15,805 times.  That means that the Mitten State Sports Report has received almost the same amount of views in the last three months, as it received in the previous fourteen months combined.  With this kind of growth, there's no telling how high the ceiling is for the Mitten State Sports Report.
The Mitten State Sports Report has tried to shed some light on sporting events not often covered by the local mainstream media.  Local wrestling, ACHA hockey, and professional soccer are just a few examples of what you can find on the Mitten State Sports Report.  Thousands of sports blogs exist today, but the Mitten State Sports Report is different then all of them.  Most writers try to compete with the big dogs like ESPN, and FOX Sports, by covering games, and topics that are already under the microscope of the national media.  Instead of providing information about a topic, some bloggers use their platform to complain about athletes, or voice their displeasure about how "their team" is being run.  Controversial views that sometimes don't even reflect the opinions of the people writing them, have replaced the purpose of reporting, which is to reveal the facts.  The Mitten State Sports Report will continue to grow, and improve by reporting the facts about the local sports topics that interest you.  You can expect to find unbiased opinions about the teams, and games that are covered on the Mitten State Sports Report.  Most importantly, when you click on the Mitten State Sports Report you will learn something new about sports in the state of Michigan.
