Red Wings Acquire Nedeljkovic








     On Thursday, July 22nd, the Detroit Red Wings acquired Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes for Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, and a 2021 3rd round draft pick.  Nedeljkovic played locally in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) with the Plymouth Whalers for three seasons, and with the Flint Firebirds for a half season.  Alex Nedeljkovic was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2nd round (37th overall pick) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Former Whalers In Carolina

 


Alex Nedeljkovic has seen time in net this season with the Carolina Hurricanes.





     Alex Nedeljkovic, and Vincent Trocheck were teammates on the Plymouth Whalers during the 2012-2013 OHL (Ontario Hockey League) season.  Both players are now having success in the NHL (National Hockey League) with the Carolina Hurricanes.  Alex Nedeljkovic has seen time in net this season due to the injury of former Detroit Red Wings Goalie Peter Mrazek.  Vincent Trocheck is playing in his first full season in Carolina after the Hurricanes acquired him in a trade with the Florida Panthers in February of 2020. 

     Alex Nedeljkovic has started 7 games this season, and currently has an overall record of 4-2-1 (1 overtime loss).  Nedeljkovic earned one of his four victories this season against the Detroit Red Wings.  Vincent Trocheck has played in 23 games this season, and currently has 22 points with 13 goals, and 9 assists.  Trocheck has scored 125 goals so far during his NHL career. 

     Alex Nedeljkovic also spent time with the Flint Firebirds during the 2015-2016 OHL season before he was traded to the Niagara IceDogs.  Vincent Trocheck spent over three seasons with Saginaw Spirit before he was traded to the Plymouth Whalers during the 2012-2013 OHL season.

Plymouth 5 - Mississauga 0





On Friday night, the Plymouth Whalers (in white) defeated the Mississauga Steelheads (in blue) 5-0. 










     The Plymouth Whalers earned a 5-0 shutout victory over the Mississauga Steelheads on Friday night, despite playing without several key players due to suspensions, and injuries.  #6 Mitch Jones is serving an eight game suspension, #32 Gianluca Curcuruto is serving a 12 game suspension, and #2 Alex Peters was out with a lower body injury.  The Whalers outshot the Steelheads 35-16, and goaltender #39 Alex Nedlejkovic earned his 3rd shutout of the season.
     Rookie center #41 Will Bitten (from Gloucester, Michigan) scored 2 goals for Plymouth on Friday night.  Left winger #82 Sonny Milano contributed 3 assists in his first game in a Plymouth Whaler uniform.  #22 Matt Mistele scored two goals, and #90 Mathew Campagna scored his 5th goal of the season.
     The Plymouth Whalers are currently in 2nd place in the West Division of the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) with 13 points, and an overall record of 6-7 (1 overtime loss).  Scroll down to check out exclusive photos from Friday night's 5-0 Whalers victory.

Whalers vs. Greyhounds





The Plymouth Whalers (in white) hosted the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (in red), at Compuware Arena last night!





Both teams are divisional rivals, and compete in the West Division of the OHL (Ontario Hockey League)!





Sault Ste. Marie defenseman #25 Darnell Nurse has already been drafted by the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL!





Plymouth defenseman #27 Yannick Rathgeb got into a fight with #39 Jean Dupuy!






There were a pair of fights at last nights game!  The Whalers are a scrappy bunch! 





#9 Zach Lorentz scored twice for the Whalers last night!  #9 Lorentz now has 13 goals this season!





Games become physical when divisional foes square off against each other!





Plymouth center # 21 Ryan Hartman checks a Greyhounds player into the boards!





Sault Ste. Marie built a 3-0 lead over the Whalers!  Plymouth fought hard to get back into the game!





#31 Brandon Halverson (from Traverse City) started in net for the Greyhounds!  #31 Halverson made 36 saves!





The Whalers pulled goaltender #39 Alex Nedeljkovic with a minute and a half left in regulation!






Sault Ste. Marie defeated the Whalers 4-3.  The Greyhounds are in 1st place in the West Division of the OHL!

Greyhounds 4 - Whalers 3





The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (in red) came into Compuware Arena last night, and defeated the Plymouth Whalers 4-3.









     The Plymouth Whalers fell behind 3-0 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds last night, and weren't able to overcome the early deficit.  Plymouth fought hard to get back into the game, and outshot the Greyhounds 39-37.  Whalers left winger #9 Zach Lorentz scored 2 goals in the second period, and Plymouth trailed 3-2 after two.  The Greyhounds added a goal in the third period to make it 4-2, but Whalers defenseman #24 Mathieu Henderson scored his third goal of the season with just under five minutes left in regulation.  The Whalers pulled goaltender #39 Alex Nedeljkovic with a minute and a half remaining, but they could not score the equalizer, and lost to the Greyhounds 4-3.
     Sault Ste. Marie is currently in 1st place in the West Division with 43 points, and an overall record of 19-6-0-3.  The Whalers are currently in 4th place in the West Division with 25 points, and an overall record of 11-16-0-3.  The Whalers are at home tonight to face the Guelph Storm at 7:05 for their annual "Teddy Bear Toss" game.  Fans will toss stuffed animals onto the ice after the Whalers score their first goal.  The toys will be collected, and distributed to their future homes with the help of the "Fallen & Wounded Soldiers Fund", and the Plymouth Community United Way.

#19 Jared McCann scored his 15th goal of the season last night.  His 3rd period goal proved to be the game winner.

Whalers vs. Generals





The Plymouth Whalers hosted the Oshawa Generals on Friday night!





The Oshawa Generals have the best record in the Eastern Conference!  They are in 1st place in the East Division!





Oshawa outshot Plymouth 51-30.  #39 Alex Nedeljkovic made 47 saves for the Whalers!





Oshawa goaltender #33 Daniel Altshuller has already been drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes! 





#33 Daniel Altshuller made 27 saves for the Generals on Friday night!





#71 Michael Dal Colle has scored 18 goals, and added 30 assists in 29 games with the Generals this season! 





#21 Scott Laughton spent some time in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers this season before returning to Oshawa!





#21 Scott Laughton has scored 21 goals, and added 21 assists in 25 games with Oshawa this season!





Oshawa defeated Plymouth 4-3 in the shootout!  Oshawa is currently 21-6-0-1.  Plymouth is currently 11-15-0-3.

Whalers Lose 4-3 in Shootout!





On Friday night, the Oshawa Generals defeated the Plymouth Whalers 4-3 in the shootout!





 


     The Oshawa Generals came into Compuware Arena on Friday night, and defeated the Plymouth Whalers 4-3 in the shootout.  The Generals have the most points in the OHL's (Ontario Hockey League's) Eastern Conference, and began the weekend with 39 points, and an overall record of 19-6-0-1.  Generals' goaltender #33 Daniel Altshuller has already been drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes, and center #21 Scott Laughton began the season with the Philadelphia Flyers, but spent just five games in the NHL (National Hockey League) before returning to Oshawa.
     #25 Carter Sandlak scored to give the Whalers the early lead on Friday, and Plymouth lead 1-0 after the 1st period.  The Whalers played hard, but were outshot 51-30.  #21 Scott Laughton, and #20 Josh Sterk each scored a goal for the Generals in regulation, and both players scored in the shootout.  #39 Alex Nedeljkovic made 47 saves for the Whalers. 
     Plymouth lost on the road last night to Owen Sound 3-2 in the shootout, and are currently in 4th place in the West Division with 25 points, and an overall record of 11-15-0-3.  The Whalers will host the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds this Friday night at 7:05 p.m.  There are a limited number of $6.00 tickets available for Friday nights game.  Click on the link below for more information.

Whalers vs. Steelheads





The Plymouth Whalers (in white) faced off against the Mississauga Steelheads (in blue) last Friday at Compuware Arena!





Both teams played physical!  There were several fights that occurred during Friday's contest!





Whalers goaltender #39 Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves and allowed only 1 goal against Mississauga! 





Mississauga's #4 Trevor Carrick has already been drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL (National Hockey League).





Mississauga's backup goaltender #31 Dawson Carty saw time in net.  He's played in 7 games for the Steelheads this season.





Mississauga's # 28 Sean Day was given an exemption by the OHL to play at the age of 15.  Day is from Rochester!







There are several new faces in Plymouth!  The Whalers have 15 new players on this years team!





The game was tied at 1 after regulation.  Neither team scored in overtime.  The game went to a shootout.





The Whalers defeated Mississauga 2-1 in the shootout!  #27 Yannick Rathgeb was credited with the winning goal!

Whalers Lose Home Opener 2-1




Whalers goaltender #39 Alex Nedeljkovic made tremendous saves in the 2-1 loss to Erie!








     The Plymouth Whalers began their 2013-2014 campaign this past weekend with a 3-0 road loss to the London Knights on Friday, followed by a 2-1 home loss at the hands of the Erie Otters.  Saturday nights game at Compuware Arena featured two of the top goaltenders in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League).  #38 Oscar Dansk has already been drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL (National Hockey League), and made 29 saves for the Erie Otters.  #39 Alex Nedeljkovic made 35 saves for the Whalers.
     The Whalers #11 Connor Chatham scored the lone goal for Plymouth late in the first period.  There was a scoreless second period, followed by two Erie goals in the third period.  #74 Dane Fox scored the first Otter goal, and Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick #28 Connor Brown scored the game winner.  #11 Connor Chatham was also ejected in the 2-1 loss.
     The 2013-2014 Whalers already feature 14 new additions that will have to get use to playing with each other.  The roster includes local players like #6 Mitch Jones from Rochester, and #8 Alex King from Taylor.  The Erie Otters roster also features players from our local area such as #31 Devin Williams from Saginaw, #57 Troy Donnay from Fenton, and #29 Nick Betz from Clinton Township.  The Whalers next home game is Saturday, October 5th against the Saginaw Spirit, puck drops at 7:05.  The Whalers are currently 0-2 on the season.  Click on the link below for more information about the Plymouth Whalers. 
     The Grand Rapids Griffins invade Compuware Arena this Saturday night to host the Lake Erie Monsters, puck drops at 7:00.  The Grand Rapids Griffins are the defending Calder Cup Champions, and are also the minor league affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.
