Memory Lane: Preseason

It seems like preseason games are quickly becoming a thing of the past.  Leagues have reduced, or scrapped their preseason games due to the pandemic, or for other various reasons.  The NFL (National Football League) did not have any preseason games this season, and the NHL (National Hockey League) is not scheduling any preseason games either.  Even college teams seem more willing to cancel non-conference games.

I wonder if preseason games will eventually become a distant memory in all sports.  The players can sometimes seem unfamiliar to even the most hardcore fans, and the games usually lack excitement, and intensity.  Another drawback to preseason games is the fact that leagues usually charge full price for tickets.  There's also a high risk for players to get injured in games that don't even count in the standings.

MLB (Major League Baseball) is still planning on holding Spring Training for the 2021 season.  The NBA (National Basketball Association) did play a reduced preseason schedule this season.  The Detroit Pistons finished the 2020-2021 NBA preseason with an overall record of 2-2.

Lindstrom With A "N"

On Thursday, February 6th, Defenseman #28 Gustav Lindstrom made his debut for the Detroit Red Wings.  The pronunciation of Lindstrom's name will surely be botched by the media, and confused with former Detroit Red Wings Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.  This is ironic because the media consistently mispronounced Lidstrom's name as Lindstrom during his 20 year career with the Detroit Red Wings.
Gustav Lindstrom was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2nd round (38th overall pick) of the 2017 NHL (National Hockey League) Entry Draft.  Lindstrom played the 2018-2019 season for the Frolunda Indians of the SHL (Swedish Hockey League).  Lindstrom played for the Grand Rapids Griffins this season, and recorded 5 assists in 45 games.

Memory Lane: Laser Puck

Laser puck, and glow puck were the unofficial names of a late 90's technology known as FoxTrax.  Fox Sports used FoxTrax (or laser puck) during its NHL (National Hockey League) broadcasts from 1996-1998.  The puck was lit up with a glow around it, and trails followed the puck after shots were released.
The FoxTrax feature reminded me of a video game, and traditional hockey fans absolutely hated it.  I personally liked it, and casual hockey fans seemed to like it as well.  Video games continue to look more like the games on television, and the games on television continue to look more like a video game.  The NHL is currently experimenting with new puck tracking technology.

Tony With Jeff Blashill

Jeff Blashill (left), with Tony Pertile (right) at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.

I recently met Jeff Blashill at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.  Jeff Blashill is currently in his 5th season as Head Coach of the Detroit Red Wings.  Coach Blashill appeared to be scouting when I met him, but he was really polite, and super cool to talk with.  He was more than happy to pose for a picture, and we both agreed that the Detroit Red Wings have a lot of good young players.  We shook hands, and I let him get back to work.

Why Don't We Have A Hockey Day?

Last Saturday was officially "Hockey Day in Canada", and the Mitten State Sports Report celebrated by attending an ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) college hockey game, despite the fact that I am not Canadian.  "Hockey Day in Canada" is a celebration of the game of hockey throughout Canada, and the event includes a television broadcast on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Network of many different levels of hockey from all around the country.  The television coverage is highlighted by an NHL (National Hockey League) triple header featuring all seven Canadian franchises.
While watching the television coverage on Saturday I began thinking, why don't we have a hockey day? Maybe the idea wouldn't be as well received in the warm weather climates, but the concept could flourish in the Midwest, and especially in the state of Michigan!  Detroit is known as "Hockeytown", and the game of hockey is as popular in the state of Michigan as it is anywhere throughout the country.  Different brands of hockey like the NHL, the AHL (American Hockey League), the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), and college hockey could all benefit from an official "Hockey Day".  There could be outdoor games, and the biggest rivalries in hockey could be scheduled for the event.  Clark Park in Detroit could be a perfect place to host "Hockey Day" games, especially with the recent upgrades which allow for night games under the lights.  Think about it, you could have the Detroit Red Wings play the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Michigan Wolverines play the Michigan State Spartans, the Plymouth Whalers play the Saginaw Spirit, and the Grand Rapids Griffins play the Toronto Marlies.  Mix in some Detroit Red Wings Alumni games, and sprinkle in some high school state final games, and you've got yourself a full slate of hockey games that would appeal to any hockey fan.  The NHL, and the game of hockey is constantly competing with other mainstream sports like baseball, basketball, and football, and a  Hockey Day in America", or even a "Hockey Day in Michigan" would only help their cause.  What do you think about a "Hockey Day in America"?  What about a "Hockey Day in Michigan"?  Leave a comment and let everyone know what you think!  You can always email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com
