Sports Talk Radio Rivalry
There are two choices on the FM dial when it comes to sports talk radio in the Metro Detroit area. 97.1 The Ticket is a CBS affiliate, and Detroit Sports 105.1 is affiliated with ESPN Radio. Detroit Sports 105.1 started off strong when it arrived on the airwaves in August of 2013, but 97.1 The Ticket currently offers a stronger selection of programming. 97.1 The Ticket broadcasts Detroit Tigers games, and Detroit Red Wings games. Detroit Sports 105.1 broadcasts Detroit Pistons games.
Drew Lane left Detroit Sports 105.1 back in October, and his departure was considered surprising. Detroit Sports 105.1 is simulcasting less ESPN Radio shows like "Mike & Mike", and the changes could push listeners away. Click on the link below for more information about Detroit Sports 105.1.
97.1 The Ticket features several local personalities including Terry Foster. Foster was a sports writer for the The Detroit News for 27 years before retiring back in December. 97.1 The Ticket used to broadcast Detroit Lions games, but the Lions are moving to WJR,760-AM for the 2016 -2017 season. Click on the link below for more information about 97.1 The Ticket.

ESPN Radio in Detroit!
A few years ago I was up north, flipping through FM radio stations when I came across 100.9 FM, which was a local ESPN radio affiliate. I thought it was so cool to be able to listen to "Mike and Mike in the Morning", and "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" on crystal clear FM radio. The station also broadcasted Lions games, Pistons games, and even local high-school sports. How cool, imagine playing for your high-school team, and seeing ESPN at your game, analyzing your performance. I thought what a cool idea, and wondered why their was no such affiliate in Detroit.
Last week, my cousin told me about an ESPN radio station in Detroit. It has been the only station on my radio ever since she informed me about it. 105.1 FM is the new ESPN affiliate in Detroit. They mix their broadcast schedule with successful ESPN radio shows, and local personalities who have already gained the respect of Detroit sports fans. Drew Lane has an afternoon talk show at 3:00 p.m. on weekdays called "Sports and More with Drew Lane & Marc Fellhauer" Fellhauer was a producer on 101.1 WRIF's "Drew & Mike" morning show, and now joins Lane on the new station. Drew Lane was let go from WRIF last May after 22 years, and was replaced by "Dave & Chuck the Freak Show". "Dave & Chuck the Freak Show" was formerly the morning show on 89X (88.7 FM), and is expected to appeal to younger listeners. Drew Lane, and Mike Clark were considered by some to be controversial, but Lane's opinions on our local sports teams have always appealed to listeners in Detroit. So far, there are no plans for Drew to reunite with Mike Clark on the air, but the broadcast schedule is sure to evolve, and change as the ratings go up and down.
Several local personalities have already joined the new 105.1 FM. Matt Dery left 97.1 FM, and now has his own afternoon show (12:00 p.m.) on 105.1 FM called "The Discussion with Matt Dery". Ryan Ermanni, and Rico Beard host the "Ryan & Rico" show weekend mornings at 8:00 a.m., and Herman Moore can be heard breaking down the Lions games, with his postgame show with Tom Mazawey.
World Series games, Monday Night Football, and the BCS Championship can also be heard on the new 105.1 FM. Broadcasting big time games, along with the blend of local personalities should bring competition to the Detroit radio market. 97.1 FM has been the lone FM sports station for some time now, and the addition of the new ESPN Detroit should make them have to step their game up.
