ACHA: Local Recap

Adrian College (Gold) celebrated their 3rd ACHA Division 3 National Championship in a row!

Adrian College has three teams that compete in men's ice hockey at the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) level.  The Bulldogs field a Division I team, as well as two Division III teams.  The Adrian (Black) Bulldogs, and the Adrian (Gold) Bulldogs both represent their school in Division III hockey, and the Gold squad has recently won their 3rd straight National Championship.  Adrian College (Gold) defeated Hope College 1-0 on Saturday, March 22nd, at the Florida Panthers IceDen to claim the National Championship.
The Bulldogs (Gold) began the 2013-2014 campaign 0-3, and completed the season with an overall record of 21-10.  The Bulldogs (Gold) finished in 3rd place in the MCHC (Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference) regular season standings, and the Gold squad was eliminated in the MCHC tournament semifinals.  Adrian (Gold) raised their level of play in the postseason, and defeated schools such as University of Arkansas 4-3, and Robert Morris University (Illinois) 6-1.  This was the third straight ACHA Division III National Championship in a row for Adrian College (Gold).
Dan Phelps has resigned as Head Coach of the Adrian Bulldogs ACHA Division I men's ice hockey team after six seasons with the school.  Phelps was responsible for an overall record of 165-65, and was named the ACHA Division I National Coach of the Year in 2011.  Phelps lead the Bulldogs to 3 GLCHL (Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League) regular season titles, and 2 GLCHL Tournament Championships.  Phelps was named the GLCHL Coach of the Year in 2011, and in 2013.  Adrian College finished the 2013-2014 season with an overall record of 31-7, but the Bulldogs were eliminated in the first round of the ACHA National Tournament by University of Central Oklahoma 1-0.

EMU Falls In 15 Goal OT Thriller

It took overtime, and 15 combined goals to determine a winner.

It took overtime, and fifteen combined goals to determine a winner on Saturday night when the Eastern Michigan University Eagles hooked up with the University of Michigan Dearborn Wolves in Dearborn.  The Eagles lead the Wolves 6-5 after two periods, and the physical play increased in the third period as both teams continued to light up the lamp.  UofM- D tied the game early in the third period, then took the lead on a power play goal with just over two minutes remaining.  The Eagles pulled their goalie, and tied the score with 45 seconds left in regulation.  It was wide open four on four skating, until the Wolves scored the game winning goal with just over three minutes remaining in overtime.  This game concluded the regular season for the Wolves, while the Eagles will head to the University of Illinois for a pair of games at Illini Arena.  The Eagles and Wolves will meet this week (Feb 15th) at Patterson Ice Arena (located in Grand Rapids) in the first round of the GLCHL (Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League) Playoffs.
Several universities such as Eastern Michigan, and the University of Michigan Dearborn compete against each other in an organization alternative to the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association).  The ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) was founded in 1991, and began with just fifteen members.  Today the ACHA has grown to three divisions for men's hockey, and two divisions for women's hockey.  ACHA teams play high quality hockey even though they offer no scholarship oppurtunities for their students, and are typically minimally funded programs.  The Eagles, and Wolves compete against each other in the GLCHL along with five other programs including Adrian College, Davenport University, Kent State University, Oakland University, and Western Michigan University.  It is important to note than some universities field an NCAA hockey team, and an ACHA team.  Western Michigan University's ACHA hockey team is known as the Stallions, but the nickname used for their NCAA hockey team is the Broncos.
The UM-D Arena seats 1,500 fans, and is a great venue for college hockey.  The UM-D Arena is located on campus, and is currently the largest ice rink in the GLCHL.  Scroll down to see exclusive photos from Saturday's college hockey showdown.  You can always leave a comment, and you can email the Mitten State Sports Report at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com
