Bakich At Clemson

 



     Erik Bakich is currently in his second season as Head Coach of the Clemson University baseball team.  Bakich was the Head Coach of the University of Michigan baseball team from 2013-2022.  The Wolverines advanced to the championship game of the College World Series in 2019.  Erik Bakich was named National Coach of the Year in 2019.

     The Clemson Tigers currently have an overall record of 44-14.  The Tigers finished in 1st place in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) regular season standings with a conference record of 20-10, but the Duke Blue Devils won the 2024 ACC Tournament.  The Clemson Tigers are currently ranked #6 in the Country according to the latest USA Today Poll.  The Clemson Tigers are headed to the NCAA Super Regional after outlasting Coastal Carolina in back-to-back games this weekend.

Simpson In Memphis

 



     #9 Zavier Simpson is currently playing Point Guard in the NBA (National Basketball Association) for the Memphis Grizzlies.  Simpson spent most of the 2023-2024 season in the NBA G League playing with the Motor City Cruise.  Zavier Simpson signed a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, March 29th, 2024.

      Zavier Simpson averaged 19.5 points a game, and 8.3 assists for the Motor City Cruise this season.  Zavier Simpson played college basketball at the University of Michigan from 2016-2020.  Simpson went undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft.  Zavier Simpson was born in Lima, Ohio.

     The Motor City Cruise finished the 2023-2024 season in 9th place in the NBA G League Eastern Conference standings with an overall record of 16-18.  The NBA G League playoffs begin tomorrow.  The Motor City Cruise did not qualify for the postseason.

Trey Burke Inactive

 



      Trey Burke began the 2023-2024 season playing Point Guard in the NBA G League for the Mexico City Capitanes.  Burke was injured earlier in the season and has remained on the inactive list since December.  Trey Burke played college basketball for the University of Michigan from 2011-2013.  The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Trey Burke in the first round (9th overall pick) of the 2013 NBA Draft, but Burke was immediately traded to the Utah Jazz.  Trey Burke was born in Columbus, Ohio.  

     The Mexico City Capitanes are currently in 5th place in the NBA G League Western Conference standings with an overall record of 9-5.  The Capitanes roster also features Forward Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Forward Kenneth Faried (also known as "the Manimal").  Trey Burke averaged 21.7 points per game, and 2.6 assists per game in 10 games played this season.

Walton Jr. In CBA

 



     #2 Derrick Walton Jr. is currently playing Point Guard in the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) for the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions.  Derrick Walton Jr. played college basketball at the University of Michigan from 2013-2017.  Walton Jr. also played for the Motor City Cruise during the 2021-2022 season.  Walton Jr. went undrafted in the 2017 NBA (National Basketball Association) Draft.  Derrick Walton Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan.  

     The Zhejiang Guangsha Lions are currently in 4th place in the CBA standings with an overall record of 24-10.  The Liaoning Flying Leopards are currently in 1st place in the CBA standings with an overall record of 28-5.  There are 20 teams competing in the 2023-2024 CBA season.

Eagles College Connections

 



     The Philadelphia Eagles (15-3) are scheduled to host the San Francisco 49ers (15-4) today in the NFC (National Football Conference) Championship on FOX beginning at 3:00 p.m.  The Philadelphia Eagles active roster currently features two players that played college football in the state of Michigan including Brandon Graham, and Josiah Scott.

     Philadelphia Eagles Defensive End #55 Brandon Graham played college football at the University of Michigan from 2006-2009.  Graham also played high school football in the city of Detroit.  The Philadelphia Eagles selected Brandon Graham in the 1st round (13th overall pick) of the 2010 NFL (National Football League) Draft.  

     Philadelphia Eagles Cornerback #33 Josiah Scott played college football at Michigan State University from 2017-2019.  The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Josiah Scott in the 4th round (137th overall pick) of the 2020 NFL Draft.  Josiah Scott is from Ohio.

Cowboys College Connections

 



     The San Francisco 49ers (14-4) are scheduled to host the Dallas Cowboys (13-5) tomorrow in an NFL (National Football League) Divisional Round game on FOX beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The Dallas Cowboys active roster currently features two players that played college football in the state of Michigan including Sean McKeon, and Cooper Rush.

     Dallas Cowboys Tight End #84 Sean McKeon played college football for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 2016-2019.  Sean McKeon went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft.  Sean McKeon is from Massachusetts.

     Dallas Cowboys Quarterback #10 Cooper Rush played college football for the Central Michigan University Chippewas from 2012-2016.  Cooper Rush also played high school football at Lansing Catholic High School.  Cooper Rush went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft.  Cooper Rush was born in Charlotte, Michigan.

49ers College Connections




     The Detroit Lions (9-8) fell just short of qualifying for the 2022-2023 NFL (National Football League) Playoffs.  If the Los Angeles Rams (5-12) could've defeated the Seattle Seahawks (9-8) last week than the Lions would be playing on the road against the San Francisco 49ers (13-4) today in a wild card matchup.  The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Los Angeles Rams 19-16 last week to help them qualify for today's NFL wild card game against the San Francisco 49ers. 

     The 49ers vs. Seahawks game can be seen today on FOX beginning at 4:30 p.m.  The San Francisco 49ers are currently riding a ten-game winning streak.  The 49ers active roster currently features three players that played college football in the state of Michigan including Jaylon Moore, Taybor Pepper, and Ambry Thomas.

     49ers Offensive Lineman #76 Jaylon Moore played college football at Western Michigan University from 2016-2020.  Moore also played high school football in the city of Detroit.  The San Francisco 49ers selected Jaylon Moore in the 5th round (155th overall pick) of the 2021 NFL Draft.  

     49ers Long Snapper #46 Taybor Pepper played college football at Michigan State University from 2012-2016.  Pepper also played high school football at Saline High School.  Taybor Pepper went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft. 

     49ers Cornerback #20 Ambry Thomas played college football at the University of Michigan from 2017-2019 (opted out in 2020).  Thomas also played high school football at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit.  The San Francisco 49ers selected Ambry Thomas in the 3rd round (102nd overall pick) of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Packers College Connection




     The Green Bay Packers (8-8) are scheduled to host the Detroit Lions (8-8) tonight on Sunday Night Football beginning at 8:20 p.m. on NBC.  The Green Bay Packers roster currently features one player that played college football in the state of Michigan.

     Green Bay Packers Guard #76 Jon Runyan Jr. played college football at the University of Michigan from 2015-2019.  The Green Bay Packers selected Jon Runyan Jr. in the 6th round (192nd overall pick) of the 2020 NFL (National Football League) Draft.  Jon Runyan Jr. has played in every NFL game since being drafted.

     Jon Runyan's father Jon Runyan Sr. also played college football for the University of Michigan from 1992-1995.  The Houston Oilers (Tennessee Titans) selected John Runyan Sr. in the 4th round (109th overall pick) of the 1996 NFL Draft.  John Runyan Sr. played fourteen seasons in the NFL before serving in the United States Congress.

     The Detroit Lions (7-8) are scheduled to host the Chicago Bears (3-12) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.  The Chicago Bears roster currently features two players that played college football in the state of Michigan including Michael Schofield III, and A.J. Thomas.

     Bears Offensive Lineman #79 Michael Schofield III played college football at the University of Michigan from 2009-2013.  The Denver Broncos selected Michael Schofield III in the 3rd round (95th overall pick) of the 2014 NFL (National Football League) Draft.  Michael Schofield III is from Orland Park, Illinois.

     Bears Defensive Back #38 A.J. Thomas played college football at Western Michigan University from 2017-2021.  Thomas played high school football at the University of Detroit Jesuit.  A.J. Thomas signed with the Chicago Bears after going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft.  A.J. Thomas is from Detroit, Michigan.

Paye Day

 



     #51 Kwity Paye is currently playing Defensive End for the Indianapolis Colts.  Paye currently has 24 tackles, and 4 sacks in 7 games played this season.  Kwity Paye recorded 32 tackles, and 4 sacks in 15 games played last season.  Kwity Paye is Active, but he's also listed as Questionable for tomorrow night's game on Monday Night Football featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-7) at the Indianapolis Colts (4-6-1).

     Kwity Paye played college football at the University of Michigan from 2017-2020.  The Indianapolis Colts selected Kwity Paye in the 1st round (21st overall pick) of the 2021 NFL (National Football League) Draft.  Kwity Paye was born in Guinea, but he grew up in Rhode Island.

Butt On BTN




     Former University of Michigan Tight End Jake Butt is currently working as a color commentator for the BTN (Big Ten Network).  Jake Butt was in the booth with Brandon Gaudin during last night's call between the Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. the Iowa Hawkeyes.  The Nebraska Cornhuskers upset the Iowa Hawkeyes 24-17.  Last night's game was played in Iowa City, Iowa.  

     Jake Butt played college football at the University of Michigan from 2013-2016.  Butt was selected by the Denver Broncos in the 5th round (145th overall) of the 2017 NFL (National Football League) Draft.  Butt was projected to go in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft before he was seriously injured in the 2016 Orange Bowl.  Jake Butt is from Pickerington, Ohio.

     There are two live games today on the Big Ten Network. The Rutgers University Scarlet Knights travel on the road to take on the University of Maryland Terrapins at 12:00 p.m.  The Purdue University Boilermakers visit the Indiana University Hoosiers at 3:30 p.m.  B1G Tailgate, B1G Live, and The Final Drive can also be seen today on the Big Ten Network.

10 Year Anniversary



This was the first picture ever posted on the Mitten State Sports Report back on April 9th, 2012.

Frozen Four Preview




     The University of Michigan Wolverines have advanced to the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four.  The #1 seeded Wolverines will face the #1 seeded University of Denver Pioneers on Thursday, April 7th, at 5:00 p.m. in Boston, Massachusetts.  The winner of the UofM vs. Denver game will face the winner of #1 Minnesota State vs. #2 Minnesota on Saturday, April 9th, at 8:00 p.m. in Boston, Massachusetts. 

     The University of Michigan hockey team currently has an overall record of 31-9-1 (1 tie).  The Wolverines finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a conference record of 16-8.  The Wolverines won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament. The University of Michigan defeated #4 American International College 5-3 in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, and then defeated #2 Quinnipiac University 7-4 in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.  

     The University of Denver hockey team currently has an overall record of 29-9-1 (1 tie).  The Pioneers finished the regular season in 1st place in the NCHC (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) standings with a conference record of 18-6.  The Pioneers lost to Minnesota Duluth 2-0 in the 2022 NCHC Tournament Semifinals.  The University of Denver defeated the #4 University of Massachusetts Lowell 3-2 in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, and then defeated the #2 University of Minnesota Duluth 2-1 in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

College Hockey - UofM

 



     The University of Michigan Wolverines earned the top overall spot in the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.  The Wolverines will face the #4 seeded American International College Yellow Jackets tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  The winner of the UofM vs. AIC game will play the winner of #2 Quinnipiac University vs. #3 St. Cloud State University. 

     The University of Michigan Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 29-9-1 (1 tie).  The Wolverines finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a conference record of 16-8.  The Wolverines won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament.  

      The American International College Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 22-12-3 (3 ties).  The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season in 1st place in the Atlantic Hockey Association standings with a conference record of 17-6-2 (2 shootout losses).  The Yellow Jackets also won the 2022 AHA Tournament.

Matthew Loves Ball On YouTube

 



     The Matthew Loves Ball YouTube channel currently has 3,345 videos for fans of college sports.  The videos on the Matthew Loves Ball YouTube channel features highlights from several college basketball games, and college football games.  The videos vary in length, but the average highlight video is about twenty minutes long.

Poole Play

 



     Shooting Guard #3 Jordan Poole is currently playing in his third season with the Golden State Warriors.  Poole is currently averaging 17.6 points per game through the first eight games of the 2021-2022 NBA (National Basketball Association) season.  Poole is second on the team in scoring this season behind Stephen Curry with 25.8 points per game.  The Golden State Warriors are currently in 1st place in the Western Conference standings with an overall record of 7-1.  Golden State is currently riding a three game winning streak.  The Warriors have done all of this so far this season without injured Shooting Guard #11 Klay Thompson. 

     Jordan Poole is also averaging 3.3 assists per game, and 1.4 steals per game for the Warriors so far this season.  The Golden State Warriors selected Jordan Poole with the 28th overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft.  Jordan Poole played his college basketball career at the University of Michigan from 2017-2019.  Jordan Poole was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Wolverines Hockey Ranked #2




     The University of Michigan Men's hockey team is currently ranked #2 in the Country according to the latest USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online) Poll.  The Wolverines were previously ranked #1 in the Country, but St. Cloud State University currently claims the top spot.  The Wolverines currently have an overall record of 5-1, and their only loss of the season came at home to the Western Michigan University Broncos 5-2.  The Western Michigan University Broncos are currently ranked #13 in the Country according to the latest USCHO Poll. 

     The University of Michigan Men's hockey team currently has three returning players that were drafted with the top five picks of the 2021 NHL (National Hockey League) Entry Draft including #10 Matty Beniers, #13 Kent Johnson, and #22 Owen Power.  Defenseman Owen Power was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the 1st overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.  Forward Matty Beniers was selected by the Seattle Kraken with the 2nd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, and Forward Kent Johnson was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the 5th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

     Sophomore Forward #34 Thomas Bordeleau lead the Wolverines in points last season with 30.  Bordeleau accumulated 8 goals, and 22 assists in 24 games played last season.  The Wolverines also received plenty of positive contributions from Sophomore Forward #19 Brendan Brisson, Senior Defenseman #7 Nick Blankenburg, Junior Forward #9 Eric Ciccolini, Junior Forward #71 Nick Granowicz, and Fifth Year Forward #21 Michael Pastujov.  

     The Wolverines also added five talented Freshman including former USA NTDP (National Team Development Program) Forward #56 Dylan Duke, and former USA NTDP Defenseman #43 Luke Hughes.  The New Jersey Devils selected Luke Hughes with the 4th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.  The other three Wolverines Freshman include Defenseman #73 Ethan Edwards, Forward #94 Mark Estapa, and Forward #11 Mackie Samoskevich.  The Florida Panthers selected Mackie Samoskevich with the 24th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

     The University of Michigan Men's hockey team will begin Big Ten competition tomorrow night at home against the University of Wisconsin Badgers.  The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers are currently the only other Big Ten team other than Michigan to be ranked in the latest USCHO Poll.  The Golden Gophers are currently ranked #7 in the Country.  The Wolverines play their home games at Yost Ice Arena located at 1000 S. State Street, in Ann Arbor.

Chidester Wins Silver

 



     Catcher Amanda Chidester played a pivotal roll in helping the USA Softball Team earn a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  Chidester hit a walk-off two-run double against Australia in the semifinal.  Team USA lost to Japan 2-0 in the gold medal final on Tuesday, July 27th.  Amanda Chidester played college softball at the University of Michigan.  Chidester also played high school softball at St. Frances Cabrini High School.  Amanda Chidester grew up in Allen Park, Michigan.

The Road To Omaha

 






     The road to Omaha runs through South Bend, Indiana for the Central Michigan University Chippewas, and the University of Michigan Wolverines.  The two schools will face off in an elimination game this afternoon after both teams lost their regional opener yesterday.  The University of Notre Dame defeated Central Michigan University 10-0 on Friday afternoon, and the University of Connecticut defeated the University of Michigan 6-1 last night. 

     The University of Michigan baseball team finished the 2021 season in 3rd place in the Big Ten Conference standings with an overall record of 27-17.  The Wolverines did not play a non-conference schedule this year.  The Central Michigan University baseball team finished the 2021 season in 1st place in the MAC (Mid-American Conference) standings with a conference record of 31-9, and an overall record of 40-17.  

     Chippewas Pitcher #31 Andrew Taylor was named MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year, and MAC Pitcher of the Year.  Taylor was even named to Collegiate Baseball's All-America Second Team.  Infielder #1 Mario Camilletti, and Outfielder #5 Zach Gilles also made the 2021 First Team All-MAC.  Pitcher #2 Grant Frazer, and Pitcher #6 Jordan Patty were named to the 2021 Second Team All-MAC.  Chippewas Head Coach Jordan Bischel was named MAC Coach of the Year.

     Wolverines Infielder #3 Ted Burton, and Pitcher #27 Steven Hajjar were named to the All-Big Ten First Team.  Outfielder #22 Tito Flores, Catcher #13 Griffin Mazur, Short Stop #2 Benjamin Sems, and Pitcher #55 Cameron Weston all made the All-Big Ten Second Team.  Infielder #8 Jimmy Obertop, and Pitcher #20 Willie Weiss were named to the All-Big Ten Third Team.
