Glass Half Full

The main story of the 2019 Quick Lane Bowl should have been the great game, the large crowd at Ford Field, or the tremendous job that Head Coach Chris Creighton has done with the Eastern Michigan University football program.  The University of Pittsburgh Panthers defeated the Eastern Michigan University Eagles 34-30, but the post game conversation was about the punches, or open slaps that occurred towards the end of the bowl game.
Eastern Michigan University Quarterback #9 Mike Glass III was ejected near the end of the 2019 Quick Lane Bowl for punching (or smacking) two different opposing players while accidentally making contact with an official.  The referee appeared to be more stunned than he was hurt on the play, but the incident didn't look great on a Nationally televised ESPN prime time broadcast.
#9 Mike Glass III is a talented Quarterback that is fun to watch, and I believe that he will be on a NFL (National Football League) team next season possibly as an undrafted free agent.  I also believe that the Eastern Michigan University football program can recover from an embarrassing incident that doesn't necessarily have to define their season, or their program.  Any publicity for the Eastern Michigan University football program could be a positive thing, and the timing of the incident helps because the team will not play another game until next season.

Is Mike & Mike Ending?

Is Mike & Mike ending?  Several trustworthy sources like Sports Illustrated, and Colin Cowherd have recently reported that Mike & Mike may be coming to an end in the near future.  Mike & Mike is a morning talk show that features the odd couple of Mike Greenberg, and Mike Golic.  Their show is broadcast on ESPN Radio, and simulcast (usually) on ESPN 2.  Mike & Mike has been a staple of ESPN for over 16 years.
Mike & Mike have recently introduced new characters to their show such as Steve Smith, Jen Lada, and Mike Golic Jr.  I believe that Mike Greenberg will soon have his own morning show, and Mike Golic will team up with his son Mike Golic Jr. for a ESPN U morning show.  Neither ESPN, or Mike & Mike have yet to confirm a break up of the long running hit show.

Top 10 Reasons ESPN is Doomed

ESPN is "The Worldwide Leader in Sports".  For several years, about half of the television that I've consumed has been on ESPN, and SportsCenter has been my favorite show for as long as I can remember. Highlights, and on air personalities have been their recipe for success, but ESPN may be headed for trouble. Here are the Top 10 Reasons Why ESPN is Doomed!

                                                                  Best of the Rest

-     Too Much Prediction Television

ESPN increasingly shows less games, and has more prediction television.  The main reason that people watch sports is because nobody really knows what's going to happen.  It is unscripted, and raw television.  Too much of the material on ESPN is about what people think is going to happen, and this turns many viewers, and listeners away.

-     Repeated Programming

ESPN has several networks, and they all need programming.  They rerun almost all of their shows, and air them on their different channels.  They also replay several games after drilling the highlights, and scores into our brains.  This turns off the viewers that have already seen the material.

Top 10 Reasons Why ESPN Is Doomed!

10.     Too Much Change

Have you ever heard the saying don't fix an engine that works?   That's exactly what ESPN does regularly on their most popular shows.  ESPN moved Cari Champion from "First Take", and recently moved Chris Fowler from "College Game Day".  People grow, and learn to like certain shows because of the anchors, and the material.  These changes turn some people away.

9.     Viewed As Bias

Some people across the Country view ESPN as being bias.  Their recent creation of the SEC (Southeast Conference) Network only fuels that fire for some.  Other Conferences, and Universities feel that they are portrayed as being inferior to the SEC, and this puts them at a disadvantage with recruiting.  This belief causes some fans to change the channel.

8.     Too Much Controversy

Several on air personalities at ESPN have recently been either suspended, or fired for their comments.  The trouble has also followed some of the anchors off the air as well.  ESPN also received heavy criticism for awarding the 2015 Arthur Ashe Award for Courage to Bruce Jenner.  Many people felt that Lauren Hill would have been a more worthy recipient.  Hill was a Freshman basketball player at Mount St. Joseph University who was suffering from terminal brain cancer.  Hill played in 4 games during the 2015 season before serving as the teams Assistant Coach.  Lauren Hill died on April 10th at the age of 19.  The recent drama at ESPN has turned many viewers away.

7.     Too Many Talk Radio Shows

ESPN struck gold in 1998 with the hit show "Mike & Mike.  The show aired on ESPN Radio, and was simulcast on television in 2006.  "Mike & Mike" continues to be a staple of ESPN, but now it seems like everybody has their own show.  It's like they throw a bunch of you know what on a wall to see what sticks. Many of the shows are very similar, and so are the opinions.  The talk radio phenomenon has even spread to the local ESPN markets.  Listening to the same views, and opinions throughout the day has pushed some sports fans away.

6.     ESPN Is Now A Launching Pad

More, and more anchors are constantly leaving ESPN to join other networks.  Dan Patrick has a talk radio show on NBC Sports, Doug Gottlieb has his own show on the CBS Sports Network, and Colin Cowherd took "The Herd" to FS1.  Other on air personalities have left ESPN for non sports related gigs.  Robin Roberts left for "Good Morning America", Josh Elliot works for "NBC News", and Charissa Thompson is on "Extra".  It seems like more on air personalities are using ESPN as a launching pad for other ventures.  Fans of these on air personalities will sometimes follow them to rival networks, and that drives viewers away.

5.     Too Much On Their Plate

ESPN officially launched in 1979, and the company expanded quickly.  They added ESPN Radio in 1992, and ESPN 2 in 1993.  The monster grew from there, and ESPN added ESPN Classic, ESPNews, ESPN U, ESPN +, ESPN Deportes, The Longhorn Network, and The SEC Network.  There are ESPN Films, and there is something called Watch ESPN.  The problem is that ESPN needs programming, and employees to fill all of their channels, and services.  This costs a lot of money, and ESPN may find that they have too much going on at once.

4.     They've Whiffed On Many Popular Sports

ESPN has missed on several popular sports throughout the years.  They whiffed on the NHL (National Hockey League), and they've allowed the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), and the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) to thrive on networks that are non sports related.  ESPN could have invented their own MMA, and Pro Wrestling leagues, but they decided not to.  They've sat back in recent years, and they've watched events like World Cup Soccer, and Thursday Night Football appear on other networks (along with the rest of us).  Fans are continuing to change the channel to find the sports that they want to watch.

3.     They Must Overpay For Programming

The bidding war for programming is at at an all time high.  There are always new sports networks arriving on the scene, and they all have to broadcast something.  This allows the major sports leagues to grow by increasing their revenue, but somebody has to shell out the bucks.  ESPN has to overpay for programming, and the result is prime time selections like Arm Wrestling.  The poor programming drives viewers away.

2.     The Internet, And Social Media Is Instant

Social media, and the evolution of the internet has made access to information instant.  People are more aware of what's taking place in the World of sports, and entertainment.  This trend means that less people are waiting around to watch the highlights on SportsCenter.  More fans are turning to social media for their news, and that drives views away from ESPN.

1.     Too Many Other Networks

ESPN was unique for several years.  Many new networks have recently popped up, and their formats are similar to ESPN.  There is now FS1, NBC Sports, the CBS Sports Network, the NFL Network, the MLB Network, the NHL Network, NBA TV, The Big Ten Network, and so on.  They all use sports tickers near the bottom of the screen, and many of the networks employ former ESPN personalities.  The risen level of competition has moved viewers to other networks.

Fantasy Football

Fan Duel is currently the largest fantasy sports website, and they don't appear to be going anywhere.  Daily fantasy sports are more popular then ever, and Fan Duel allows you to play in weekly, or daily leagues.  In 2014, Fan Duel paid out more then $550 million in winnings, and the number is expected to grow.  In 2015, Fan Duel is expected to pay out more then $2 billion in winnings.  For more information about Fan Duel click on  https://www.fanduel.com
Draft Kings is currently the second largest fantasy sports website, and they are continuing to get bigger.  In 2015, Draft Kings is projected to payout more then $1 billion in winnings.  Draft Kings recently added ESPN to it's group of ever growing partners in an attempt to stay near the top of the fantasy sports world.  For more information about Draft Kings click on  https://www.draftkings.com
Always proceed with caution when playing fantasy sports on any website.  Many of the people that win large amounts of money are gaming profesionals, also known as "Sharks".  In 2006, fantasy sports received an exemption from the (UIGEA) Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act making online fantasy sports 100% legal.

March Madness: Local Preview

March Madness is officially underway, and this years NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) tournament features three schools from the state of Michigan.  Compare that to the state of Indiana, which currently has 10 Division 1 schools competing in the NCAA, but zero teams qualifying for the 68 team tournament.  The University of Michigan Wolverines, and the Michigan State Spartans were expecting to be playing for a National Championship; but the Western Michigan Broncos have also made the tournament, and could be the "Cinderella Story" if they manage to win a couple of games, and make it to the "Sweet 16".
The Michigan Wolverines won the regular season Big 10 Championship, have earned themselves a #2 seed in the Midwest Region.  The Wolverines have an overall record of 25-8, and will face #15 Wofford College, tonight (7:10 p.m.), on CBS.  Wofford competes in the Southern Conference, and they have an overall record of 20-12.  If the Wolverines advance tonight, they'll face the winner of #7 Texas vs. #10 Arizona State, on Saturday.
The Michigan State University basketball team won the Big 10 Tournament, and have earned themselves a #4 seed in the East Region.  The Spartans have an overall record of 26-8, and will face #13 University of Delaware, later this afternoon (4:40 p.m.), on TNT.  Delaware competes in the Colonial Athletic Conference, and they have an overall record of 25-9.  If the Spartans advance, they'll face the winner of #5 Cincinnati vs. #12 Harvard, on Saturday.
The Western Michigan Broncos won the MAC (Mid-American Conference) Tournament Championship, and have earned themselves a #14 seed in the South Region.  The Broncos have an overall record of 23-9, and will face #3 Syracuse University, this afternoon (2:45 p.m.), on CBS.  Syracuse competes in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), and they have an overall record of 27-5.  If the Broncos advance, they'll face the winner of #6 Ohio State vs. #11 Dayton, on Saturday.

Over 2,000 Views A Month!

Hockey fights have contributed to the over 2,000 views per month that the Mitten State Sports Report currently receives!

The Mitten State Sports Report has continued to earn over 2,000 views per month on a consistent basis for several months in a row.  It was during the month of June when the Mitten State Sports Report began to see an increase in the number of views that this publication receives.  By the time that July rolled around, the Mitten State Sports Report was receiving over 2,000 views a month.  In the last 30 days, the Mitten State Sports Report has received 2,395 views from all around the world, and the number will hopefully continue to rise.  The highest monthly total came in August when the Mitten State Sports Report received 2,400 views.  Although the number has continued to fluctuate, the amount of views per month has remained above 2,000 (since the start of July).
At the beginning of August the total number of views received was just over 8,000.  Today (November 12th), the Mitten State Sports Report has been clicked on over 15,805 times.  That means that the Mitten State Sports Report has received almost the same amount of views in the last three months, as it received in the previous fourteen months combined.  With this kind of growth, there's no telling how high the ceiling is for the Mitten State Sports Report.
The Mitten State Sports Report has tried to shed some light on sporting events not often covered by the local mainstream media.  Local wrestling, ACHA hockey, and professional soccer are just a few examples of what you can find on the Mitten State Sports Report.  Thousands of sports blogs exist today, but the Mitten State Sports Report is different then all of them.  Most writers try to compete with the big dogs like ESPN, and FOX Sports, by covering games, and topics that are already under the microscope of the national media.  Instead of providing information about a topic, some bloggers use their platform to complain about athletes, or voice their displeasure about how "their team" is being run.  Controversial views that sometimes don't even reflect the opinions of the people writing them, have replaced the purpose of reporting, which is to reveal the facts.  The Mitten State Sports Report will continue to grow, and improve by reporting the facts about the local sports topics that interest you.  You can expect to find unbiased opinions about the teams, and games that are covered on the Mitten State Sports Report.  Most importantly, when you click on the Mitten State Sports Report you will learn something new about sports in the state of Michigan.
If you would like to advertise, donate to, or sponsor the Mitten State Sports Report here is how to do so.  Email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com  Put advertise, donate, or sponsor as the subject of your email.  Explain who you are, and what your situation is and your email will be responded to in a timely matter by one of the experts at the Mitten State Sports Report.  Your support is critical to the health and well being of this publication.  Thanks for making the Mitten State Sports Report your choice for information about sports, and events in the state of Michigan!
