USPBL News: March 2022








     The 2022 USPBL (United Shore Professional Baseball League) season is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 20th, at 7:05 p.m. with a rematch of the 2021 USPBL Championship Game between the Utica Unicorns, and the Eastside Diamond Hoppers.  The 2022 USPBL All-Star Game is scheduled for Saturday July 9th, at 5:30 p.m.  The 2022 USPBL Championship Game is scheduled for Sunday, September 11th, at 1:05 p.m.  

     The 2022 USPBL season features two divisions, and four teams.  The USPBL East Division features the Eastside Diamond Hoppers, and the Utica Unicorns.  The USPBL West Division includes the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers, and the Westside Woolly Mammoths.  All USPBL games are played at Jimmy John's Field located at 7171 Auburn Road, in Utica.  USPBL games can be seen on the United Shore Professional Baseball League YouTube channel.

     The Utica Unicorns won the 2021 USPBL Championship.  The Unicorns also won the USPBL Championship in 2016, 2019, and in 2020.  The Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers won the USPBL Championship in 2017, and in 2018.  The USPBL played their inaugural season in 2016.

-  Andy Appleby is the CEO, and owner of the USPBL. 


-  Dana Schmitt is the President of the USPBL.


-  The USPBL was also featured on the Mitten State Sports Report in 2018, 2019, 2020, and in 2021.

FPHL News: March 2022




     The Port Huron Prowlers have clinched a spot in the 2021-2022 FPHL (Federal Prospects Hockey League) Playoffs with four regular season games remaining on their schedule.  The Prowlers are currently in 6th place in the FPHL standings with 55 points, and an overall record of 18-29-3 (3 overtime losses).  The Watertown Wolves are currently in 1st place in the FPHL standings with 115 points, and an overall record of 39-11-2 (2 overtime losses).  

     Watertown Wolves Forward #23 Justin MacDonald currently leads the FPHL in points this season with 116.  MacDonald also currently leads the league in goals with 59.  MacDonald is currently 2nd in the FPHL in assists with 57.  Binghamton Black Bears Defenseman #27 Kyle Powell currently leads the league in assists with 64.  Carolina Thunderbirds Goaltender #31 Chris Paulin currently leads the FPHL in wins with 17. 

     Port Huron Prowlers Forward #92 Dalton Jay currently leads the team in goals, assists, and points.  Jay has accumulated 34 goals, 36 assists, and 70 points in 48 games played this season.  Prowlers Forward #51 Matt Graham has compiled 19 goals, 35 assists, and 54 points in 50 games played this season.  Prowlers Defenseman #25 Alex Johnson has produced 20 goals, 27 assists, and 47 points in 50 games played this season.    

     The Port Huron Prowlers won the 2016 Commissioner's Cup.  The Prowlers play their home games at McMorran Arena located at 701 McMorran Blvd, in Port Huron, Michigan.  Live Prowlers games can be seen on the Port Huron Prowlers YouTube channel.

Firebirds News: March 2022

 



     The Flint Firebirds are currently in 3rd place in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) Western Conference standings with 77 points, and an overall record of 36-19-1-4 (1 overtime loss, and 2 shootout losses).  The Firebirds currently trail the London Knights by 1 point for 2nd place in the OHL Western Conference standings.  The Windsor Spitfires are currently in 1st place in the OHL Western Conference standings with 82 points, and an overall record of 38-16-3-3 (3 overtime losses, and 3 shootout losses).  

     The Hamilton Bulldogs currently have the best overall record in the Ontario Hockey League.  The Bulldogs are currently in 1st place in the OHL Eastern Conference standings with 91 points, and an overall record of 43-12-3-2 (3 overtime losses, and 2 shootout losses).  There are 20 teams competing in the 2021-2022 OHL season. 

     Flint Firebirds Left Winger #78 Brennan Othmann is currently 3rd in the OHL in goals this season with 41.  Othmann has also accumulated 45 assists, and 86 points in 58 games played this season.  Brennan Othmann was selected by the New York Rangers with the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NHL (National Hockey League) Entry Draft.  Othmann is from Pickering, Ontario.  

     Flint Firebirds Goaltender #37 Luke Cavallin currently leads the OHL in wins this season with 30.  Firebirds Right Winger #19 Riley Piercey is currently 2nd on the team in goals with 27, and 2nd on the team in points with 58.  Piercey has also accumulated 31 assists in 55 games played this season.  Riley Piercey is from Mississauga, Ontario.  Luke Cavallin is from Greely, Ontario.

     Windsor Spitfires Center #55 Wyatt Johnston currently leads the OHL in points this season with 112.  Johnston also currently leads the OHL in assists with 71.  Johnston is currently 2nd in the OHL in goals this season with 41.  London Knights Right Winger #14 Luke Evangelista currently leads the OHL in goals this season with 50.  Evangelista has also accumulated 50 assists, and 100 points in 55 games played this season.

Frozen Four Preview




     The University of Michigan Wolverines have advanced to the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four.  The #1 seeded Wolverines will face the #1 seeded University of Denver Pioneers on Thursday, April 7th, at 5:00 p.m. in Boston, Massachusetts.  The winner of the UofM vs. Denver game will face the winner of #1 Minnesota State vs. #2 Minnesota on Saturday, April 9th, at 8:00 p.m. in Boston, Massachusetts. 

     The University of Michigan hockey team currently has an overall record of 31-9-1 (1 tie).  The Wolverines finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a conference record of 16-8.  The Wolverines won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament. The University of Michigan defeated #4 American International College 5-3 in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, and then defeated #2 Quinnipiac University 7-4 in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.  

     The University of Denver hockey team currently has an overall record of 29-9-1 (1 tie).  The Pioneers finished the regular season in 1st place in the NCHC (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) standings with a conference record of 18-6.  The Pioneers lost to Minnesota Duluth 2-0 in the 2022 NCHC Tournament Semifinals.  The University of Denver defeated the #4 University of Massachusetts Lowell 3-2 in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, and then defeated the #2 University of Minnesota Duluth 2-1 in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

Akron 7-5 EMU

     On Saturday, March 26th, the University of Akron baseball team defeated the Eastern Michigan University Eagles 7-5 (in 11 innings) in the second game of a doubleheader.  The Eagles earned an 8-5 victory over the Zips earlier on Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader.  The Eagles also picked up two wins over the Zips on Friday (10-9. and 18-6).  Scroll down to see exclusive photographs from the second game of the doubleheader played on Saturday. 

     The Eastern Michigan University Eagles are currently in 5th place in the MAC (Mid-American Conference) standings with a conference record of 4-4, and an overall record of 8-13.  The University of Akron Zips are currently in 10th place in the MAC standings with a conference record of 5-7, and an overall record of 6-15.

On Saturday, March 26th, the Akron Zips defeated the EMU Eagles 7-5 in 11 innings.





The Eagles defeated the Zips 8-5 earlier on Saturday.





The Eagles also picked up two wins over the Zips on Friday (10-9, 18-6).






The EMU Eagles currently have an overall record of 8-13.  The Eagles are currently 4-4 in the MAC.



The Akron Zips currently have an overall record of 6-15.  The Zips are currently 5-7 in the MAC.

-  Eric Roof is the Head Coach of the Eastern Michigan University baseball team.   


-  Chris Sabo is the Head Coach of the University of Akron baseball team. Sabo is a former MLB All-Star Third Baseman for the Cincinnati Reds.  Chris Sabo played college baseball at the University of Michigan.


-  Eagles Utility Player #24 Gabe Denton currently leads the Eagles in home runs with 8.  Denton is currently batting .250 with 17 runs batted in. 


-  The Ball State University Cardinals are currently in 1st place in the MAC standings with a conference record of 7-1, and an overall record of 12-8.

MHSAA Basketball Finals

 



     On Saturday, March 26th, the 2021-2022 MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) basketball State Finals were held at the Breslin Center located at 534 Birch Road, in East Lansing.  Warren De La Salle Collegiate High School defeated Grand Blanc High School 67-58 to win the Division 1 State Final.  Williamston High School defeated Grand Rapids Catholic Central 68-65 in overtime to win the Division 2 State Final.  Schoolcraft High School defeated Menominee High School 59-49 to win the Division 3 State Final.  Wyoming Tri-unity Christian School defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 56-45 in overtime to win the Division 4 State Final.

Hope Wins Titles

 



     On Tuesday, March 15th, the Hope College Men's hockey team defeated the University of Michigan Wolverines 2-1 to win the 2022 ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) Division 3 National Championship.  The Hope College Men's hockey team finished the 2021-2022 season with an overall record of 34-1.  The Flying Dutchmen finished the regular season in 1st place in the MCHC (Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference) standings with a conference record of 19-0.  Hope College lost to Grand Valley State University 3-2 (in double overtime) in the MCHC Tournament Final.

     On Saturday, March 19th, the Hope College Women's basketball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks 71-58 to win the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division III National Championship.  The Hope College Women's basketball team finished the 2021-2022 season with an overall record of 32-1.  Hope College finished the regular season tied for 1st place (with Trine University) in the MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) standings with an overall record of 15-1.  Hope College defeated Trine University 54-50 in the MIAA Tournament Championship.

-  Chris Van Timmeren is the Head Coach of the Hope College Men's hockey team. 


-  Brian Morehouse is the Head Coach of the Hope College Women's basketball team.


-  The Hope College Women's basketball team suffered their only loss of the season in a regular season matchup against Trine University.  Hope College went 3-1 against Trine University during the 2021-2022 season.


-  The NCAA Women's Division III Basketball Tournament was cancelled in 2020, and 2021 because of the pandemic.

College Hockey - WMU

 



     The Western Michigan University Broncos have earned a #1 seed in the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.  The Broncos will face the #4 seeded Northeastern University Huskies tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Worcester, Massachusetts.  The winner of the WMU vs. Northeastern game will play the winner of #2 Minnesota vs. #3 Massachusetts. 

     The Western Michigan University Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 25-11-1 (1 tie).  The Broncos finished the regular season in 3rd place in the NCHC (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) standings with a conference record of 14-9-1 (1 tie).  The Broncos lost to Minnesota Duluth 3-0 in the 2022 NCHC Tournament Championship.   

     The Northeastern University Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 25-12-1 (1 tie).  The Huskies finished the regular season in 1st place in the Hockey East with a conference record of 15-8-1 (1 tie).  The Huskies lost to Connecticut 4-1 in the 2022 Hockey East Tournament Semifinals.  Massachusetts defeated Connecticut 2-1 in overtime to claim the 2022 Hockey East Tournament Championship.

College Hockey - MTU

 



     The Michigan Tech University Huskies have qualified for the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.  The #3 seeded Huskies will face the #2 seeded University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs today at 3:00 p.m. in Loveland, Colorado.  The winner of the MTU vs. Minn-Duluth game will play the winner of #1 University of Denver vs. #4 University of Massachusetts Lowell.

     The Michigan Tech University Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 21-12-3 (3 ties).  The Huskies finished the regular season in 2nd place in the CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) standings with a conference record of 16-8-2.  The Huskies lost in the semifinals of the 2022 CCHA Tournament.

     The University of Minnesota Duluth Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 21-15-4 (4 ties).  The Bulldogs finished the regular season in 5th place in the NCHC (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) standings with a conference record of 10-10-4.  The Bulldogs won the 2022 NCHC Tournament.

College Hockey - UofM

 



     The University of Michigan Wolverines earned the top overall spot in the 2022 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.  The Wolverines will face the #4 seeded American International College Yellow Jackets tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  The winner of the UofM vs. AIC game will play the winner of #2 Quinnipiac University vs. #3 St. Cloud State University. 

     The University of Michigan Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 29-9-1 (1 tie).  The Wolverines finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a conference record of 16-8.  The Wolverines won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament.  

      The American International College Men's hockey team currently has an overall record of 22-12-3 (3 ties).  The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season in 1st place in the Atlantic Hockey Association standings with a conference record of 17-6-2 (2 shootout losses).  The Yellow Jackets also won the 2022 AHA Tournament.

CIF News: March 2022

 



     The 2022 CIF (Champions Indoor Football) season features 8 teams including the Billings Outlaws, the Omaha Beef, the Rapid City Marshalls, the Salina Liberty, the Sioux City Bandits, the Southwest Kansas Storm, the Topeka Tropics, and the Wyoming Mustangs.  The Omaha Beef won Champions Bowl VI (2021 CIF Championship).  CIF games can be seen on the Champions Indoor Football Network YouTube channel.  

     The Wyoming Mustangs joined Champions Indoor Football in 2021.  The Billings Outlaws, the Rapid City Marshalls, the Southwest Kansas Storm, and the Topeka Tropics are all 2022 CIF expansion teams.  The Omaha Beef, and the Sioux City Bandits both previously played in the IFL (Indoor Football League).  The Salina Liberty joined Champions Indoor Football in 2016.

NAL News: March 2022

 



     The 2022 NAL (National Arena League) season is scheduled to kick off next month with 6 teams including the Albany Empire, the Carolina Cobras, the Columbus Lions, the Jacksonville Sharks, the Orlando Predators, and the San Antonio Gunslingers.  The Albany Empire won the 2021 NAL Championship.  NAL games can be seen on the National Arena League YouTube channel.

     The Albany Empire joined the NAL in 2021.  They are a revival of the Albany Empire team that competed in the AFL (Arena Football League) in 2018, and 2019.  The Arena Empire won ArenaBowl XXXII (2019 AFL Championship).  The Arena Football League folded after the 2019 season.

     The Orlando Predators joined the NAL in 2019.  They are also a revival of the Orlando Predators team that competed in the AFL from 1991-2016.  The Jacksonville Sharks competed in the AFL from 2010-2016.  The Sharks joined the NAL in 2017 and went on to win the 2019 NAL Championship.  The San Antonio Gunslingers are a National Arena League expansion team.  The Gunslingers competed in the AAL (American Arena League) in 2021.

MHSAA Hockey Finals

 



     On Saturday, March 12th, the 2021-2022 MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) hockey State Finals were held at the USA Hockey Arena located at 14900 Beck Road, in Plymouth.  Detroit Catholic Central defeated Brighton High School 5-1 to claim the Division 1 State Final.  Hartland High School defeated Trenton High School 3-2 in overtime to win the Division 2 State Final.  Midland Dow defeated Orchard Lake St. Mary's 2-0 to capture the Division 3 State Final.

Sports On Stadium




     Various games, and sporting events can be seen for free on the Stadium website.  Some of the programming on the Stadium website includes archived action from the AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals), BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fight Club), college athletics, EFC (Extreme Fighting Championship), IFL (Indoor Football League), Ring of Honor Wrestling, Strongman Champions League, UFA (United Fighting Alliance), and WPT (World Poker Tour). 

     The Stadium website features college games from several conferences including Conference USA, the Mountain West Conference, and the WCC (West Coast Conference).  There are also series and shows on the Stadium website like "Inside the Association", "Live on the Line - Powered by BetMGM", "The Fighter", and "The Short List".

Football: IFL News

 



     The 2022 IFL (Indoor Football League) season kicks off later today with 2 conferences, and 14 teams.  The IFL Eastern Conference features the Bismarck Bucks, the Frisco Fighters, the Green Bay Blizzard, the Iowa Barnstormers, the Massachusetts Pirates, the Quad City Steamwheelers, and the Sioux Falls Storm.  The IFL Western Conference features the Arizona Rattlers, the Bay Area Panthers, the Duke City Gladiators, the Northern Arizona Rattlers, the San Diego Strike Force, the Tucson Sugar Skulls, and the Vegas Night Hawks.  

     The Massachusetts Pirates won the 2021 United Bowl (IFL Championship).  The Pirates entered the IFL in 2021 after competing in the NAL (National Arena League) in 2018, and in 2019.  The Duke City Gladiators were added to the IFL in 2020 after competing in the CIF (Champions Indoor Football) from 2015-2019.  The Gladiators won the 2018 CIF Championship, and the 2019 CIF Championship.  The Vegas Night Hawks are an expansion team competing in their first IFL season.  The Colombus Wild Dogs are scheduled to compete in the 2023 IFL season.

Tim Hortons Brier On ESPN3

 



     Live, and archived coverage of the 2022 Tim Hortons Brier can be seen on ESPN3.  The 2022 Tim Hortons Brier features 18 Men's Curling teams from across Canada.  The winning team will represent Canada in the 2022 World Men's Curling Championship (April 2nd - April 10th) in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The 2022 Tim Hortons Brier is taking place from March 4th - March 13th in Lethbridge, Alberta.  

     Team Alberta skipped by Kevin Koe currently leads Pool A with an overall record of 7-1.  Team Canada skipped by Brendan Bottcher is currently in 2nd place in Pool A with an overall record of 7-1.  Saskatchewan skipped by Colton Flasch is currently in 3rd place in Pool A with an overall record of 6-2.  Wild Card #2 skipped by Matt Dunstone is also in Pool A with a 6-2 overall record.

     Wild Card #1 skipped by Brad Gushue currently leads Pool B with an overall record of 8-0.  Northern Ontario skipped by Brad Jacobs is currently in 2nd place in Pool B with an overall record of 6-2.  Wild Card #3 skipped by Jason Gunnlaugson is currently in 3rd place in Pool B with an overall record of 5-3.  Manitoba skipped by Mike McEwen is also in Pool B with a 5-3 overall record.

Lumberjacks News: March 2022

 



      The Muskegon Lumberjacks are currently in 3rd place in the USHL (United States Hockey League) Eastern Conference standings with 56 points, and an overall record of 25-15-3-3 (3 overtime losses, and 3 shootout losses).  The Chicago Steel are currently in 2nd place in the USHL Eastern Conference standings with 62 points, and the Dubuque Fighting Saints are currently in 1st place in the USHL Eastern Conference standings with 63 points.  There are 16 teams competing in the 2021-2022 USHL season.  Each team is scheduled to play 62 regular season games this season.  

     Lumberjacks Forward #28 Quinn Hutson is currently (tied for) 3rd in the USHL in goals with 26, and (tied for) 5th in the USHL in points with 58.  Hutson has also accumulated 32 assists in 44 games played this season.  Lumberjacks Forward #7 Phillip Tresca has accumulated 25 goals, 21 assists, and 46 points in 46 games played this season.  Lumberjacks Forward #12 Ben Strinden has accumulated 21 goals, 25 assists, and 46 points in 46 games played this season.  Lumberjacks Forward #9 Joey Larson has accumulated 24 goals, 21 assists, and 45 points in 46 games played this season.  

     The Muskegon Lumberjacks roster features five players from the state of Michigan including Forward #25 Bennett Barnes (Northville), Defenseman #3 Tyler Dunbar (Sault Ste. Marie), Goaltender #29 Cameron Korpi (South Lyon), Forward #9 Joey Larson (Brighton), and Forward #24 Landon MacDonald (Brighton).  The Lumberjacks play their home games at Mercy Health Arena located at 470 W. Western Ave, in Muskegon.

Matchroom Pool On YouTube

 



     The Matchroom Pool YouTube channel currently features 1,008 videos for fans of billiards, and particularly the game of 9-ball.  Some of the videos on the Matchroom Pool YouTube channel include "Alexander Kazakis vs Skyler Woodward | Premier League Pool | Stage Two", "Shane Van Boening vs Jason Shaw | Premier League Pool | Day 5", and "BEST SHOTS | 2021 Cazoo Mosconi Cup".  The Matchroom Pool YouTube channel currently has over 118,000 subscribers. 

     The next live 9-ball event on the Matchroom Pool YouTube channel is the World Pool Championship (United Kingdom) scheduled for April 6th - April 10th.  The final event of the year is the Mosconi Cup scheduled for November 30th - December 3rd at Bally's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino.  The Mosconi Cup is an annual competition that pits European teams against teams from the United States.
