Pertile Wins 2nd Annual Derby!

Tony Pertile won again at the 2nd Annual Mitten State Sports Report Home Run Derby!

For the second year in a row, Tony Pertile claimed victory at the 2nd Annual Mitten State Sports Report Home Run Derby.  Manning Park in Redford hosted all of the festivities, and the weather couldn't have been nicer for this years event (76%, with 10-15 mile winds).  The hitting display began early when Pertile sent the first pitch he saw far over the fence in straight away centerfield.  Pertile went on to hit 12 homeruns setting a new Mitten State Sports Report Home Run Derby record for most homeruns in a single round.  For the second year in a row, each competitor was allowed 10 outs (which is any swing that doesn't result in a homerun), and the number of rounds played was one.  The original Derby rules allowed for 27 outs per competitor, but the executive decision was made to decrease the number to ten (both years).  In future Mitten State Sports Report Home Run Derby's, the number of outs allowed per competitor will now be 10.

Pertile's quest for victory would not be denied!

The Mitten State Sports Report sat down with this years Derby winner for a Q and A!

Mitten State Sports Report  Q.  How does it feel to be the winner of the Home Run Derby?

Tony Pertile  A.  It feels great!  Last year I was a nobody, then I won the Mitten State Sports Report Home Run Derby and became somebody!

Mitten State Sports Report  Q.  Will you compete in next years Home Run Derby?

Tony Pertile  A.  It's too early to say.  I do know that I will be logging on to the Mitten State Sports Report on a regular basis though!

Mitten State Sports Report  Q.  So you are a fan of the Mitten State Sports Report?

Tony Pertile  A.  Yes, Absolutely!  I've read them all; Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, Baseball Digest, but none of them give me what I get when I log onto the Mitten State Sports Report!  Auto racing, college baseball, college hockey, college basketball, OHL hockey, pro wrestling, and the list goes on and on!  Nobody else out there takes me deep inside the world of sports and entertainment in our great state of Michigan, while providing in depth information and analyzing teams and events not often covered by the local main stream media!  When I read it I feel like I jumped on some kind of journalistic sports car!   Keep up the outstanding work!

Mitten State Sports Report  Q.  Well that's all the questions I have.  It's great to know that the Mitten State Sports Report has good quality people for fans!

Tony Pertile  A  Hey, game recognizes game.

Pertile set a new record for most Home Runs in a single round with twelve!

Thanks to all that attended!  We'll see you again next year!

Answering Your Questions!

Tony Pertile won the 1st Annual "Mitten State Sports Report Home Run Derby".

I decided to take this opportunity to answer some of your most commonly asked questions about the Mitten State Sports Report.  The power of social media enables us to interact with one another.  Your emails, and comments have lit up the inbox at  mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com
Here are the answers to your questions!

Q. How many people operate the Mitten States Sports Report?

A. I (Tony Pertile) do all of the writing, photography, editing, posting, and web design.  Friends, and family do contribute by attending games with me.

Q. Who won the '1st Annual Mitten States Sports Home Run Derby'?

A. Tony Pertile claimed victory at the 1st Annual "Mitten States Sports Report Home Run Derby"at Manning Park in Redford.   The 98 degree temperature, along with 30 mile per hour wind gusts had a huge impact on keeping balls inside the park.  With only ten outs per contestant, it seemed as if nobody was going to hit one out.  Then with only two outs remaining, Pertile hit a moon shot to left field to secure victory.  Thanks to everyone who attended and we'll see you again next year!  Check out more photos from the derby!

Q. Will there be an update to the 'Veterans Memorial Park Makeover' post?

A. Yes.  As soon as the weather breaks I will be heading back out to Ann Arbor to check on the progress of the Veterans Memorial Park makeover.  This story is very important to several league baseball, and softball players that call this park their home. In a similar story, I will also be updating the progress of another renovation at nearby West Park.  This park also serves as a home for several baseball, and softball leagues throughout our area.
