MWJHL Playoffs: Local Preview

The Soo Firehawks are one of three teams still alive in the Midwest Junior Hockey League Playoffs!

The MWJHL (Midwest Junior Hockey League) Playoffs are underway, and there are three teams from the state of Michigan competing for a chance to hoist the Veteran's Memorial Cup, and for a chance to play in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) National Tournament!  The Alpena Street Cats qualified for the MWJHL Playoffs as the #4th, and final seed, and were scheduled to play a best of three game series against the Traverse City Hounds, but do to undisclosed circumstances, the Street Cats will not compete in postseason play, and Traverse City will automatically earn a buy into the Veteran's Memorial Cup Finals. The Alpena Street Cats finished the season with 45 points, and an overall record of 22-20 (1 shootout loss).
The Traverse City Hounds finished the regular season with the best overall record in the MWJHL.  The Hounds accumulated 67 points, and had an overall record of 32-10 (1 overtime loss, 2 shootout losses).  The Hounds are automatically entered into the National AAU Tournament, due to the fact that they finished the regular season with the best overall record.  If the Hounds also win the Veteran's Memorial Cup, then the runner up will be chosen to represent the MWJHL in the National AAU Tournament.
The Soo Firehawks finished the 2013-2014 regular season in 2nd place in the MWJHL standings with 63 points, and an overall record of 31-11 (1 shootout loss).  The Firehawks are hosting the Detroit Fighting Irish for a best of three game series, and all three games (game 3 if necessary) are being played in Sault Ste. Marie.  The Detroit Fighting Irish finished up the regular season with the 3rd best overall record in the MWJHL with 59 points, and an overall record of 27-15 (5 shootout losses).  The Fighting Irish defeated the Soo Firehawks last night 5-2 to steal game 1 of the best of 3 game series.
The Traverse City Hounds are waiting on the winner of the Firehawks vs. Fighting Irish series, and will host all three games of the best of three game series beginning next Friday, March 28th at 7:30 p.m.  Game 2 of the Veteran's Memorial Cup Finals will be played the following night on Saturday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m.  If necessary, game three of the series will be played on Sunday, March 30th at 1:00 p.m.
