Ocelots Oust Alpena 87-83 In OT

Schoolcraft's Terel Sewell went strong to the bucket!

On Wednesday night, the Schoolcraft Ocelots defeated the visiting Alpena Lumberjacks 87-83 (in overtime) on breast cancer awareness night.  The Ocelots controlled the pace early, and lead by 22 points with 4:30 left in the first half.  Alpena began to slice into the lead behind the shifty ball handling of #3 Kharri Dailey, and the consistent scoring from #15 Lavario Smith.  For most of the second half, Schoolcraft played without one of their starters.  As a result of a serious foot injury, #33 Jordan Eastman did not return to play, but did later resurface behind the Ocelots bench on crutches.  With 6:00 left in the game, the Lumberjacks cut the deficit to eight points (60-52), and suddenly found themselves within striking distance.   The Ocelots continued to score, but turned the ball over and allowed the Lumberjacks to gain momentum, and force overtime.  In the extra session, both teams went to the free throw line on numerous occasions, and the outcome was ultimately decided by the team that shot better from the line.  The Ocelots capitalized on their free throw attempts to secure the 87-83 victory at home.
Alpena Community College, and Schoolcraft College both play in Division II of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association), and both schools compete against each other together in the MCCAA (Michigan Community College Athletic Association).  The MCCAA includes 18 schools from the regional area, and is divided into two conferences.  The Eastern Conference includes Alpena Community College, Delta College, Henry Ford Community College, Kirtland Community College, Macomb Community College, Mott Community College, Oakland Community College, Schoolcraft College, St. Clair County Community College, and Wayne County Community College District.  The Western Conference includes Glen Oaks Community College, Grand Rapids Community College, Jackson Community College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Kellogg Community College, Lake Michigan Community College, Lansing Community College, and Muskegon Community College.

Several players scramble after the loose ball!
