Why Don't We Have A Hockey Day?
Last Saturday was officially "Hockey Day in Canada", and the Mitten State Sports Report celebrated by attending an ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) college hockey game, despite the fact that I am not Canadian. "Hockey Day in Canada" is a celebration of the game of hockey throughout Canada, and the event includes a television broadcast on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Network of many different levels of hockey from all around the country. The television coverage is highlighted by an NHL (National Hockey League) triple header featuring all seven Canadian franchises.
While watching the television coverage on Saturday I began thinking, why don't we have a hockey day? Maybe the idea wouldn't be as well received in the warm weather climates, but the concept could flourish in the Midwest, and especially in the state of Michigan! Detroit is known as "Hockeytown", and the game of hockey is as popular in the state of Michigan as it is anywhere throughout the country. Different brands of hockey like the NHL, the AHL (American Hockey League), the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), and college hockey could all benefit from an official "Hockey Day". There could be outdoor games, and the biggest rivalries in hockey could be scheduled for the event. Clark Park in Detroit could be a perfect place to host "Hockey Day" games, especially with the recent upgrades which allow for night games under the lights. Think about it, you could have the Detroit Red Wings play the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Michigan Wolverines play the Michigan State Spartans, the Plymouth Whalers play the Saginaw Spirit, and the Grand Rapids Griffins play the Toronto Marlies. Mix in some Detroit Red Wings Alumni games, and sprinkle in some high school state final games, and you've got yourself a full slate of hockey games that would appeal to any hockey fan. The NHL, and the game of hockey is constantly competing with other mainstream sports like baseball, basketball, and football, and a Hockey Day in America", or even a "Hockey Day in Michigan" would only help their cause. What do you think about a "Hockey Day in America"? What about a "Hockey Day in Michigan"? Leave a comment and let everyone know what you think!
