Horse Racing News - November

     On Saturday, October 24th, Belichick won the 2020 Breeders' Stakes.  Meyer finished Place (2nd place), and English Conqueror finished Show (3rd place).  The 2020 Breeders' Stakes took place at Woodbine Racetrack located in Toronto, Ontario.  The Breeders' Stakes marked the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.  

     On Saturday, October 31st, Sandbetweenmytoes won the 2020 Breeders Crown for sophomore pacing colts and geldings.  Tall Dark Stranger finished Place (2nd place), and Cattlewash finished Show (3rd place).  Sandbetweenmytoes won as a 200/1 long shot.  The 2020 Breeders Crown took place on Friday October 30th, and Saturday October 31st at Harrah's Hoosier Park located in Anderson, Indiana.  The 2020 Breeders Crown featured twelve Championship harness races for Standardbred horses.

     On Sunday, November 1st, Honor Way won the 2020 Pumpkin Pie Stakes.  Pacific Gale finished Place (2nd place), and Never Enough Time finished Show (3rd place).  The 2020 Pumpkin Pie Stakes took place at Belmont Park located in Elmont, New York.  

     The 2020 Fall Meet at Belmont Park came to a conclusion on Sunday, November 1st.  Jose Ortiz finished the meet as the top rider with 40 wins.  Chad Brown finished the meet as the top trainer with 22 wins.  Klaravich Stables finished the meet as the top owner with 13 wins.      

     On Saturday, November 7th, Authentic won the 2020 Breeders' Cup Longines Classic.  Improbable finished Place (2nd place), and Global Campaign finished Show (3rd place).  Whitmore won the 2020 Breeders' Cup Sprint.  C Z Rocket finished Place (2nd place), and Firenze Fire finished Show (3rd place).  Monomy Girl won the 2020 Breeders' Cup Longines Distaff.  Valiance finished Place (2nd place), and Dunbar Road finished Show (3rd place).  Gamine won the 2020 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.  Serengeti Empress finished Place (2nd place), and Bell's the One finished Show (3rd place).  The 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships took place on Friday, November 6th, and Saturday November 7th at Keeneland located in Lexington, Kentucky.  The 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships featured fourteen races. 

     On Thursday, November 26th, Envoutante won the 2020 Falls City Stakes.  Bonny South finished Place (2nd place), and Another Broad finished Show (3rd place).  The 2020 Falls City Stakes took place at Churchill Downs located in Louisville, Kentucky.

      Northville Downs is temporarily closed, and the Live Harness Racing season at Northville Downs has been paused due to current pandemic restrictions.  Check the Northville Downs website for more information.  Northville Downs is located at 301 S. Center Street, in Northville, Michigan.    

     America's Day at the Races is an excellent television program on FS1, and FS2 that covers Thoroughbred horse racing.  America's Day at the Races currently focuses on the Aqueduct Racetrack Fall Meet, but other race tracks are also spotlighted.  The 2020 Aqueduct Racetrack Fall Meet is scheduled to run through Sunday, December 6th.  Aqueduct Racetrack is located in New York City, New York.    

     Daily Racing Form, and Equibase have informative websites about Thoroughbred horse racing entries, results, and cancellations.  BloodHorse, and Paulick Report have terrific sports blogs for fans of Thoroughbred horse racing. 

     The America's Best Racing YouTube channel, and the NYRA, (New York Racing Association) Inc. YouTube channel have lots of great videos regarding horse racing.  The Daily Racing Form YouTube channel also has informative videos compiled from DRF reporters, and handicappers.

Northwood Esports News

     On Sunday, November 22nd, the Northwood University Timberwolves defeated the University of Missouri Tigers four games to none to capture the first ever Maui Esports Invitational.  The game that was featured was Rocket League, and the event was delivered by goPuff.  The first ever Maui Esports Invitational Championship was televised on ESPN2. 

     The Northwood University Esports team won 20 out of 21 games in the first ever Maui Esports Invitational.  The Northwood Timberwolves defeated the University of Alabama in the quarterfinals, and then went on to defeat the University of Illinois in the semifinals.  ESPNU televised the semifinals of the first ever Maui Esports Invitational.

LTU Adds Women's Hockey

 

     Lawrence Tech University recently added Women's ice hockey to their athletic program, and the Blue Devils are scheduled to begin playing in the 2021-2022 season.  The Blue Devils have already named Greg Moore as their Head Coach.  Greg Moore previously coached, and played (goalie) at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota.

Memory Lane: G.L.O.W.

 

     I remember turning the television dial one evening as a youngster, and accidentally stumbling upon G.L.O.W. (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) on one of the blurry, snowy channels.  It was cheesy, but entertaining so I made an effort to watch the weekly broadcasts.  I can recall the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling theme song that played before each episode, and I even remember specific wrestlers like Babe the Farmer's Daughter, Daisy, Godiva, Matilda the Hun, and Mt. Fiji.  

     Many former wrestlers have spoken about their experiences at G.L.O.W. on different social media platforms.  There was a documentary made about G.L.O.W in 2012, and Netflix did a series based on G.L.O.W. in 2017.  G.L.O.W. has been owned by Ursula Hayden (Babe the Farmer's Daughter) since 2001.

     The PokerGo YouTube channel currently features 775 videos for fans of poker.  Some of the videos on the PokerGo YouTube channel include "Paul Pierce Top 5 Poker Hands", "Tony Hawk Plays Poker?!  Big Bluffs & Crazy Moments", and "UFC Legends Randy Couture, Dan Henderson & Bruce Buffer Clash at the Poker Table". 

     The PokerGo YouTube channel also features video segments like "Friday Night Poker", "High Stakes Poker Best Poker Hands", and "Run it Back".  "Friday Night Poker" videos last a little over four hours in length.  The PokerGo YouTube channel currently has over 92,000 subscribers.

UPSL News - November

City United SC competes in Division I of the UPSL Midwest Conference - East Division.

     The 2020 UPSL (United Premier Soccer League) Fall season is well underway with six local teams competing in Division I.  The UPSL Midwest Conference - East Division includes Bafana United FC, City United SC, Detroit United, Inter Detroit, Rebels FC, and Wayne County Sporting.  2020 UPSL Fall season games can be seen on MyCujoo.  

     Detroit United is currently in 1st place in the UPSL Division I Midwest Conference - East Division standings with 25 points, and an overall record of 8-0-1 (1 tie).  Bafana United FC is currently in 6th place in the UPSL Division I Midwest Conference - East Division standings with an overall record of 0-7-1 (1 tie).

Vultures 27-19 Sparrows

 

     On Sunday, November 1st, the Baltimore Vultures defeated the Sioux Falls Sparrows 27-19 to win the 15th SFL (Simulation Football League) Championship.  Vultures Quarterback Jack Wigmore completed 31 of 40 passing attempts for 232 yards, and 2 touchdowns.  Wigmore did throw 3 interceptions however.  Troy Gaines lead the Vultures rushing attack with 17 carries for 59 yards.

     Sioux Falls Sparrows Quarterback Julian Tyree completed 23 of 39 passing attempts for 215 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.  Colin Hart lead the Sparrows rushing attack with 11 carries for 119 yards.  Sparrows Kicker Maxwell Falck had a perfect afternoon from field goal range.  Falck made all four of his field goal attempts with his longest coming from 44 yards. 

     The Baltimore Vultures finished the 15th SFL regular season with an overall record of 9-3.  The Sioux Falls Sparrows also finished the 15th SFL regular season with an overall record of 9-3.  Archived Simulation Football League games can be seen on the Simulationfl YouTube channel.  The Simulation Football League is also on Facebook, and Twitter.

     Detroit Jock City has an excellent sports blog that analyzes many of our local sports teams.  Detroit Jock City covers pro teams like the Lions, the Tigers, the Pistons, and the Red Wings.  Detroit Jock City also covers local colleges like Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University.  Detroit Jock City is one of more than three hundred blogs on Fansided.  Bob Heyrman, and Tyler Kotila write several articles for Detroit Jock City.

G-League Team In Detroit

     The city of Detroit will soon have its own NBA G-League team known as the Motor City Cruise.  The Cruise will play their home games at a new facility that's being constructed on the campus of Wayne State University.  The Motor City Cruise are scheduled to debut in the NBA G-League during the 2021-2022 season.  The Cruise have not yet named their Head Coach.  

     The Motor City Cruise will be a direct affiliate of the Detroit Pistons.  The Pistons purchased the Northern Arizona Suns back in July so they could move the team to Detroit.  The Northern Arizona Suns were an affiliate of the Phoenix Suns.  The Grand Rapids Drive were previously an affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, but the future of the Drive is now unclear.

Memory Lane: Mechanics

 

     The Motor City Mechanics are a dormant professional hockey team that existed for only two seasons (2004-2006) in the UHL (United Hockey League).  The Mechanics were aided by the cancellation of the 2004-2005 NHL (National Hockey League) season because of a lockout.  The Mechanics roster featured four NHL players including Sean Avery, Chris Chelios, Derian Hatcher, and Brian Smolinski.

     Chris Chelios, and Derian Hatcher would've played for the Detroit Red Wings in a normal NHL season.  The Mechanics also signed Kris Draper, but the Red Wings Center never played in a single game for the Mechanics because of visa problems.  The Motor City Mechanics failed to reach the United Hockey League Playoffs during the 2004-2005 season.  The Motor City Mechanics played their home games in Fraser, Michigan.  Their home ice arena was nicknamed "The Garage".

-  The United Hockey League is dormant.

-  The Kalamazoo Wings competed in the United Hockey League.  The Wings currently compete in the ECHL. 

-  The Fort Wayne Komets competed in the United Hockey League.  The Komets currently compete in the ECHL. 

-  The Flint Generals competed in the United Hockey League.  The Generals are now dormant. 

-  The Kalamazoo Wings swept the Motor City Mechanics (four games to none) in the 1st round of the 2005-2006 United Hockey League Playoffs.  

-  The Detroit Mechanix are a professional ultimate disc team that competes in the AUDL (American Ultimate Disc League).
