Uof M Splits Series With Coastal Carolina

There was a good crowd for Tuesday night baseball at Ray Fisher Stadium!

The Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina, (33-15) visited Ray Fisher Stadium this week for a two game series against the Michigan Wolverines.  It was the first time that the two teams have ever met in Ann Arbor, and each team claimed a victory in the process.  The Wolverines (20-29) have stumbled a bit this season, and are currently in second to last place in the The Big Ten'with a 6-12 record against the rest of the conference.  The Wolverines roster is littered with youth, including thirteen freshman along with eight Sophomores.  As their experience level increases, their leadership should help the Wolverines achieve several victories over the coarse of the next few seasons.
Coastal Carolina lead all of Division 1 in ERA (2.44) coming into the series against the Wolverines, and their pitching was on display as soon as they got off the bus.  Ryan Connolly's relief pitching performance was the story of Tuesday nights game.  He entered the game in the bottom of the third inning, and never looked back as he often appeared to pull the string on confused Wolverine hitters, who were unable to make good contact against Connolly's stuff.  Upon Connolly's arrival the score was 2-1 in favor of the Chanticleers and the Wolverines had the bases loaded.  The Wolverines were unable to add anything to the scoreboard and fell 6-1 under the lights in the series opener.
A good combination of offense, and pitching fueled the Wolverines to a 5-2 victory over the Chanticleers on Wednesday night.  As the light rain fell upon Ray Fisher Stadium, the Wolverines allowed just 5 hits, while scoring two runs in the first inning, and adding two more runs in the second.  Wolverine Senior Bobby Brosnahan lasted three innings allowing just one hit.  Wolverine Freshman Matt Ogden pitched five innings in relief and only allowed one hit while earning the win.  The game got interesting in the ninth inning, when the Wolverines left the door open for the Chanticleers who scored two quick runs to cut the deficit to 5-2.  Sophmore pitcher Alex Lakatos struck out the final two batters to secure the victory for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines must now go on the road for a three game series starting tonight against the #15 nationally ranked Purdue Boilermakers who are currently 37-9 overall and are 14-4 against the rest of 'The Big Ten'.  Michigan returns next Thursday to close out the 2012 home schedule with a three game series against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  Nebraska is currently in seventh place in 'The Big Ten' with a 9-9 record against the conference, while posting a 29-19 overall record.
Give both Coastal Carolina, and Michigan lots of credit for scheduling this weeks series in Ann Arbor.  The Chanticleers have a well respected program which has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last five seasons.  Successful programs from the South rarely come to the Midwest to play non-conference games.  Normally teams from the Midwest travel down south early in the season to play away games, or games held at neutral sites.  The Chanticleers had already defeated the Wolverines twice in March at Watson Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The scores of those games were 7-3, and 6-2.

Action in the bullpen!

Sophmore Michael O'Neill entered the series with a 336 batting average.

Senior Day At Oestrike Stadium

EMU drops their final home game 9-3

Eastern Michigan wrapped up their home slate this past weekend when Bowling Green visited Oestrike Stadium for a three game series in which the Eagles took two out of three games.  Senior night was Sunday afternoon, and the Falcons spoiled the party with a 9-3 win over Eastern Michigan.  The Eagles gave up four runs in the first inning, and starter Ryan Lavoie (3-3) was replaced by Jordan Glover who lasted 5.2 innings and surrendered no earned runs.  The Eagles commited 6 errors, (season high) but were in striking distance going into the ninth inning trailing 6-3.  The Falcons added three more runs in the ninth to secure the victory over the Eagles.
The Mid-American Conference West Division is a tight race as we approach the end of the regular season.  The Eagles are now 22-24 on the season and 12-9 in the MAC trailing Toledo by one game for the top overall spot in the division.  The Mid-American Conference Tournament begins on May 23rd, and will be played in Avon Ohio. (home of Kent State)
The Eagles played a tough, and respectable non-conference schedule this season including two wins over the University of Michigan.  The Eagles out scored the Wolverines by a combined total of 19-4 in the home and away meeting.  The Eagles were also 3-0 against in state rival Western Michigan, and 2-1 against their other rival Central Michigan.  The Eagles currently rank in the top 50 in the nation in several offensive categories, and pitcher Steve Weber (6-3) has been a bright spot this season winning the 'MAC West Pitcher Of The Week Award' twice.
Throughout the years, EMU's baseball program has earned respect on a national level for running a solid, competitive program while producing fifteen former MLB stars.  In 1976, Eastern Michigan made it all the way to the championship game of the 'College World Series' before eventually losing to Arizona.  The Eagles are the last team from Michigan, the midwest, or anywhere in the north to play for the championship.

The Eagles stayed within striking distance until the ninth!

The dugout watches with Eagle eyes!

The Eagles could not overcome the early deficit!

Good game, good game!

Opening Night At Flat Rock Speedway

ARCA racing is back at Flat Rock Speedway!

Last Saturday was opening night for racing at Flat Rock Speedway, and Mitten State Sports Report was there to take in all the action.  The weather was cooperative, and the intensity of the event was on display from the moment I passed through the gates.  When I sat down in the grandstands, I looked up and witnessed an accident take place on the far side of the track.  Throughout the night there were several crashes including a small engine fire under the hood of one of the race cars.  As for the actual racing, it was a phenominal event that only got better as the night went on.  The family friendly environment, along with the great food, made coming to the track a memorable experience and is a trip worth repeating.  The staff at Flat Rock Speedway was also very friendly, and helpful in assisting fans with questions and concerns.

There's a seat waiting for you in the grandstands!

Flat Rock Speedway offers fans the oppurtunity to connect with their favorite drivers in several unique ways.  Autograph alley is a new addition to the track this year, and gives fans a chance to meet the drivers that end up in victory lane.  Announcers constantly provide fans with information, along with historical facts about the race track, and drivers.  When wrecks cause the action to be put on hold, interviewed race car drivers keep the fans entertained, and informed of even the most minor details.  Next Saturday night, (May 12th) Flat Rock Speedway celebrates 50 years of figure 8 racing with a 'Racers Reunion' night.  Fans will get a chance to walk on the track, and meet current drivers along with heroes from the past.

A view from the grandstands!

Whether you like the 'Late Models', 'Street Stock', or the intensity of the figure 8's, Flat Rock Speedway has something for everyone.  Gates open hours before the actual races begin, which gives fans the oppurtunity to make a day out of it, and really get value for their hard earned dollar.  The grandstands include an alcohol free section for families, and hills that landscape one side of the track to assist fans who seek a view in the comfort of their favorite lawn chair.  Some of the highlights this season include monster trucks, fireworks, and open practices during the week.  For more info on Flat Rock Speedway check out  http://www.flatrockspeedway.com/
