Spirit News: February 2022

 



     The Saginaw Spirit are currently in 10th place in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) Western Conference standings with 35 points, and an overall record of 17-30-1 (1 overtime loss).  The Spirit are currently 7 points out of the final spot of the 2021-2022 OHL Western Conference Playoffs with 20 regular games left on their schedule.  The Kitchener Rangers, and the Sarnia Sting currently sit ahead of the Spirit in the OHL Western Conference standings with 42 points each.  

     The Saginaw Spirit roster currently features two players that have already been selected by NHL (National Hockey League) teams including Left Winger #17 Josh Bloom (Buffalo Sabres), and Goaltender #30 Tristan Lennox (New York Islanders).  Josh Bloom currently leads the team in goals, and in points.  Bloom has accumulated 23 goals, 24 assists, and 47 points in 48 games played this season.

     The Saginaw Spirit roster currently features six players from the state of Michigan including Right Winger #43 Davis Codd (Brighton), Left Winger #19 Dalton Duhart (Grand Blanc), Defenseman #27 P.J. Forgione (Novi), Right Winger #12 Dean Loukus (Calumet), Defenseman #22 Mitchell Smith (Saginaw), and Goaltender #29 Andrew Oke (Shelby Township). 

     Windsor Spitfires Center #55 Wyatt Johnston currently leads the OHL in points this season with 85.  Johnston has already accumulated 29 goals, and 56 assists in 46 games played this season.  London Knights Right Winger #14 Luke Evangelista currently leads the OHL in goals this season with 41.  Evangelista has also accumulated 39 assists, and 80 points in 41 games played this season.  Kingston Frontenacs Right Winger #27 Lucas Edmonds currently leads the OHL in assists this season with 57.  Edmonds also has 26 goals, and 83 points in 47 games played this season.  London Knights Goaltender #30 Brett Brochu currently leads the OHL in wins this season with 27.

-  Chris Lazary is the Head Coach of the Saginaw Spirit.  


-  Dave Drinkill is the General Manager of the Saginaw Spirit.  


-  Spirit Left Winger #17 Josh Bloom was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the 31st pick (95th overall) in the 3rd Round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.  Josh Bloom is from Oakville, Ontario.

Firebirds News: February 2022




     The Flint Firebirds are currently in 1st place in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) Western Conference standings with 66 points, and an overall record of 31-15-1-3 (1 overtime loss, and 3 shootout losses).  The Firebirds are currently 4 points ahead of the London Knights, and the Soo Greyhounds for the top spot in the OHL Western Conference standings.  

     The Hamilton Bulldogs currently have the best overall record in the Ontario Hockey League.  The Bulldogs are currently in 1st place in the OHL Eastern Conference standings with 68 points, and an overall record of 32-11-2-2 (2 overtime losses, and 2 shootout losses).  There are 20 teams competing in the 2021-2022 OHL season.

     The Flint Firebirds roster currently features four players that have already been selected by NHL (National Hockey League) teams including Left Winger #92 Ethan Keppen (Vancouver Canucks), Center #13 Braeden Kressler (Toronto Maple Leafs), Defenseman #79 Dmitry Kuzmin (Winnipeg Jets), and Left Winger #78 Brennan Othmann (New York Rangers).  

     Flint Firebirds Left Winger #78 Brennan Othmann is currently 2nd in the OHL in goals this season with 35.  Othmann has also accumulated 38 assists, and 73 points in 48 games played this season.  Firebirds Goaltender #37 Luke Cavallin is currently 2nd in the OHL this season in wins with 25.  Flint Firebirds Right Winger #19 Riley Piercey is currently 2nd on the team in goals with 25.  Piercey has also accumulated 27 assists, and 52 points in 45 games played this season.

-  The Flint Firebirds played their inaugural OHL season in 2015-2016.  The Firebirds replaced the Plymouth Whalers when Peter Karmanos sold the Whalers in 2015.

-  Terry Christensen is the General Manager of the Flint Firebirds. 


-  The Flint Firebirds play their home games at the Dort Financial Center located at 3501 Lapeer Road, in Flint, Michigan. 


-  Firebirds Left Winger #78 Brennan Othmann was selected by the New York Rangers with the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.  Othmann is from Pickering, Ontario.

PASL News: February 2022

 



     The 2021-2022 PASL (Premier Arena Soccer League) Men's Division features 23 teams from across the United States.  The Brew City Legends (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) are currently in 1st place in the PASL standings with 9 points, and an overall record of 4-0-1 (1 tie).  Metro Louisville FC (Kentucky) won the 2020-2021 PASL Championship.  The PASL also features a Women's Division that includes 10 teams for the 2021-2022 season.

     The Detroit Waza Flo are currently in 14th place in the PASL standings with 2 points, and an overall record of 1-3.  Every team in the PASL standings from 9th place through 15th place also currently has 2 points.  The Waza Flo will play their next home game tonight against the Indiana Lions starting at 8:00 p.m. at the Taylor Sportsplex located at 13333 Telegraph Road, in Taylor.  Live, and archived Detroit Waza Flo games can be seen on Go Live Sports Cast.  

     The Detroit Waza Flo roster features several talented players that fans of indoor soccer will recognize like #10 Nelson Diaz, #16 Abu Al-Gabri, #18 Abdu Al-Gabri, #6 Ricardo Lopes, #12 Zane Polack, #9 Jeff Rutledge, #13 Saeed Tawil, and #4 Costa Wells.  The Waza Flo also have some new players like #5 Michael Diaz, #17 Carlos Garcia, John Hollowell, and (Goalkeeper) Michael Forbes.  Dominic Scicluna, and #14 Mario Scicluna are both players, and coaches for the Detroit Waza Flo.  Dominic Scicluna has recently been inactive as a player due to an apparent knee injury.

-  The PASL was founded in 1997 as the FSA (Federation of Sports Arenas).


-  The Detroit Waza Flo competed in the MASL (Major Arena Soccer League) from 2008-2016.  The Waza Flo then went on to compete in MASL2 from 2017-2019. 


-  Waza Flo newcomer Michael Diaz is the son of Nelson Diaz.


-  Dominic Scicluna, and Mario Scicluna, and Tino Scicluna are brothers.  Tino Scicluna previously played several seasons with the Detroit Waza Flo. 


-  Abu Al-Gabri, and Abdu Al-Gabri are brothers.  


-  Former Waza Flo Midfielder #24 Ian Walker currently plays for the Brew City Legends. 


-  Former Waza Flo Goalkeeper Enrique Orozco currently plays for the Indiana Lions (FC Indiana).

MASL3 News: February 2022




     The MASL3 is currently playing in their inaugural season as a developmental league to the Major Arena Soccer League, and the MASL2.  The 2021-2022 MASL3 season features two divisions, and nine teams.  Northern Virginia FC is currently in 1st place in the MASL3 East Division with an overall record of 7-0.  Des Moines United FC is currently in 1st place in the Midwest Division of the MASL3 with an overall record of 3-1.  

     The Grand Rapids Wanderers, and the Muskegon Risers II are both listed as inactive teams on the MASL3 website.  The Grand Rapids Wanderers were accepted to play in the 2021-2022 MASL3 season, but the Wanderers have aspirations of competing in the 2022-2023 MASL2 season due to the pandemic, and their close proximity to the Muskegon Risers.  The Muskegon Risers currently compete in the MASL2 Great Lakes Division.

-  The Grand Rapids Wanderers were previously known as the Great Lakes Wanderers.  The club was founded in 2017.  The Great Lakes Wanderers played charity games in 2018, and 2019.  The team became known as the Grand Rapids Wanderers in 2020. 


-  The Grand Rapids Wanderers also have a Women's team.  


-  Pedro Sanchez is the Interim Head Coach of the Grand Rapids Wanderers Men's team.  Sanchez is also the Club Director.  


-  Mike Boogaart is the Head Coach of the Grand Rapids Wanderers Women's team.  Boogaart is also the Youth Director of Coaching.

MASL2 News: February 2022

 



       The MASL2 has been a developmental league to the Major Arena Soccer League since 2017.  The 2021-2022 MASL2 season features 13 teams from across the United States.  The Cleveland Crunch are currently in 1st place in the MASL2 Great Lakes Division standings with an overall record of 9-0.  The Wichita Wings are currently in 1st place in the MASL2 Midwest Division standings with an overall record of 6-2.  The San Diego Sockers2 are currently in 1st place in the MASL2 West Division standings with an overall record of 7-1.  The Cleveland Crunch are the defending MASL2 Champions.

      The Muskegon Risers are currently in 2nd place in the MASL2 Great Lakes Division standings with an overall record of 5-5.  Muskegon Risers Forward #28 Miguel Flores currently leads the MASL2 in points with 28.  Cleveland Crunch Midfielder #4 Mike Derezic also has 28 points, and Derezic currently leads the MASL2 in goals with 22.  Omaha Kings FC Defender #5 Murilo Ceruli currently leads the MASL2 in assists with 15.  Cleveland Crunch Goalkeeper #24 Marijo Musa currently leads the MASL2 in wins with 8.

MASL News: February 2022

 



     The 2021-2022 MASL (Major Arena Soccer League) season features twelve teams from across the United States, and even Mexico (Chihuahua Savage).  The Kansas City Comets are currently in 1st place in the MASL Central Division standings with 31 points, and an overall record of 10-2-1 (1 overtime loss).  The Florida Tropics are currently in 1st place in the MASL East Division standings with 31 points, and an overall record of 10-1-1 (1 overtime loss).  The San Diego Sockers are currently in 1st place in the MASL West Division standings with 36 points, and an overall record of 13-0-1 (1 overtime loss).  The San Diego Sockers won the 2021 Ron Newman Cup (MASL Championship).  

     Milwaukee Wave Forward ##26 Ian Bennett currently leads the MASL in scoring with 30 goals.  Bennett also leads the league in points with 39.  St. Louis Ambush Midfielder #9 Mohamed Ndiaye currently leads the MASL in assists with 19.  San Diego Sockers Goalkeeper #27 Boris Pardo currently leads the MASL in wins with 10.  Live, and archived MASL games can be seen on the MASLtv YouTube channel.  

     The Detroit Waza Flo competed in the MASL from 2008-2016.  The Waza Flo then went on to compete in the MASL2 from 2017-2019.  The Detroit Waza Flo currently compete in the PASL (Premier Arena Soccer League).  The Waza Flo have already played home games this season at the Melvindale Civic Arena, and at the Wide World Sports Center in Ann Arbor.  The Detroit Waza Flo are scheduled to play the Indiana Lions in their next home game on Saturday, February 26th, at 8:00 p.m. at the Taylor Sportsplex located at 13333 Telegraph Road, in Taylor.  Live, and archived Detroit Waza Flo games can be seen on Go Live Sports Cast.

FPHL News: February 2022

 



     The FPHL (Federal Prospects Hockey League) announced on Thursday that six of its seven teams will make the 2022 FPHL Playoffs.  The top two overall seeds will earn a first-round bye, and the third overall seed will get to choose their first-round opponent.  The top overall seed will then get to choose their second-round opponent from the three remaining teams.  The first two rounds of the playoffs are all best-of-three game series.  The number of games to be played in the Commissioner's Cup final has not yet been determined.

     The Port Huron Prowlers are currently in 6th place in the 2021-2022 FPHL standings with 40 points, and an overall record of 13-21-2 (2 overtime losses).  The Prowlers will most likely make the playoffs ahead of the Delaware Thunder.  The Thunder are currently in 7th place in the 2021-2022 FPHL standings with 6 points, and an overall record of 2-30-1 (1 overtime loss).  The Watertown Wolves are currently in 1st place in the 2021-2022 FPHL standings with 80 points, and an overall record of 27-6-1 (1 overtime loss). 

     Watertown Wolves Forward #23 Justin MacDonald currently leads the FPHL in points this season with 82.  MacDonald also currently leads the league in assists this season with 43.  Binghamton Black Bears Forward #8 Nikita Ivashkin currently leads the FPHL in goals this season with 43.

     Port Huron Prowlers Forward #92 Dalton Jay currently leads the team in goals, assists, and points.  Jay has accumulated 28 goals, 29 assists, and 57 points in 34 games played this season.  Prowlers Forward #51 Matt Graham is currently second on the team in points with 39.  Graham is also the Head Coach, and General Manager of the Port Huron Prowlers.  Prowlers Defenseman #25 Alex Johnson is currently third on the team in points with 36.  Johnson is also an Assistant Coach, and General Manager of the Port Huron Prowlers.

     The Port Huron Prowlers won the 2016 Commissioner's Cup.  The Prowlers play their home games at McMorran Arena located at 701 McMorran Blvd, in Port Huron, Michigan.  Live Prowlers games can be seen on the Port Huron Prowlers YouTube channel.

-  The FPHL was formerly known as the FHL (Federal Hockey League).  The league made the switch going into the 2018-2019 season.


-  The Commissioner's Cup was known as the Ignite Cup last season. 


-  The Battle Creek Rumble Bees, the Motor City Rockers, and the St. Clair Shores Fighting Saints are all dormant FPHL, or FHL teams.  The Motor City Rockers have never played a game in the FPHL. 


-  The FHL played their inaugural season in 2010-2011.

Thunderbirds On YouTube

 



     The Carolina Thunderbirds TV YouTube channel currently features 329 videos for fans of professional hockey.  The Carolina Thunderbirds are a successful minor league franchise that competes in the FPHL (Federal Prospects Hockey League) against six other teams including their biggest rival the Port Huron Prowlers.  The Carolina Thunderbirds YouTube channel has several full hockey games, and lots of Thunderbirds games vs. the Port Huron Prowlers.  

     The Carolina Thunderbirds TV YouTube channel also features short video segments such as "Coaches Show", "Film Study", "Kids Stix", and "Weekend Recap".  Archived ACCHL (Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League) hockey games can also be seen on the Carolina Thunderbirds TV YouTube channel. 

     The Carolina Thunderbirds have played three consecutive games against the Port Huron Prowlers, and the teams will play another two consecutive games against each other later tonight at 6:05 p.m. and tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 p.m.  Both games can be seen live on the Carolina Thunderbirds TV YouTube channel.  Dillon Clark does the play-by-play commentary for the Carolina Thunderbirds games. 

     The Carolina Thunderbirds are currently in 5th place in the 2021-2022 FPHL standings with 59 points, and an overall record of 20-16-3 (3 overtime losses).  The Thunderbirds are averaging just under 2,500 fans per game this season at home.  The Carolina Thunderbirds play their home games at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex in North Carolina. 

     The Carolina Thunderbirds roster features four players from the state of Michigan including Forward #5 Cameron Dimmitt (Howell), Forward #22 George Holt (Rochester Hills), Forward #7 Tim Perks (Oxford), and Forward #15 Everett Thompson (Grand Rapids).  Kelly Curl is the Interim Head Coach, and General Manager of the Carolina Thunderbirds.  

     The Carolina Thunderbirds won the 2019 Commissioner's Cup (FPHL Championship).  The name of the cup changed last season to the Ignite Cup, but the Commissioner's Cup has returned for this season.  Fiddlin' Fish Brewing Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina produces a "Carolina Thunderbirds Blonde Ale", a "Thunderbirds Red" wine, a "Carolina White" wine, and a "Carolina Thunderbirds Vanilla Coffee Porter".

Soccer: NISL News




     The NISL (National Indoor Soccer League) is a new professional indoor soccer league currently playing their inaugural season with a Men's Division, and a Women's Division.  The 2021-2022 NISL season features four teams including the Columbus Rapids (Georgia), the Fayetteville Fury (North Carolina), the Memphis Americans (Mississippi), and the Rome Gladiators (Georgia).  Games can be seen on the National Indoor Soccer League YouTube channel. 

     The Memphis Americans are currently in 1st place in the 2021-2022 NISL Men's Division standings with an overall record of 7-2.  The Fayetteville Fury are currently in 2nd place in the 2021-2022 NISL Men's Division standings with an overall record of 6-2.  Memphis Americans Midfielder #33 Djordje Djordjevic leads the NISL Men's Division in goals with 15.  Djordjevic also leads the NISL Men's Division in points with 19.  

    The Memphis Americans are currently in 1st place in the 2021-2022 NISL Women's Division standings with an overall record of 8-1.  The Rome Gladiators are currently in 2nd place in the 2021-2022 NISL Women's Division standings with an overall record of 3-1.  Memphis Americans Midfielder #22 Ashlynn Jones leads the NISL Women's Division in goals with 10.  Jones also leads the NISL Women's Division in points with 12.

     The Motor City Cruise are currently in 2nd place in the NBA G-League Eastern Conference standings with an overall record of 12-4.  The Cruise roster includes talented players such as Devon Baulkman, Cheick Diallo, Luka Garza, Saben Lee, Isaiah Livers, Chris Smith, Justin Turner, and Derrick Walton Jr.  Isaiah Livers, and Derrick Walton Jr. both played college basketball at the University of Michigan.  Justin Turner played high school basketball at Renaissance High School in Detroit, Michigan.  The Motor City Cruise play their home games at the Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit.

2022 Plymouth Ice Festival

     The 40th Annual Plymouth Ice Festival took place last weekend in downtown Plymouth.  Larger ice sculptures were displayed at Kellogg Park, and smaller ice sculptures were placed in front of businesses throughout the downtown area.  Rain, and above freezing temperatures on Friday afternoon were followed by frigid conditions from Friday evening through Sunday.  Snow accumulation of about two inches made it challenging to see the ice sculptures on Sunday evening.  Scroll down to see exclusive photographs from the 2022 Plymouth Ice Festival.

USA 13-0 St. Andrew's



On Saturday, February 12th, the USA NTDP U-17 Team defeated the St. Andrew's College Saints 13-0.





     On Saturday, February 12th, the USA NTDP (National Team Development Program) U-17 Team defeated St. Andrew's College Saints 13-0 at the USA Hockey Arena located at 14900 Beck Road, in Plymouth.  Team USA was lead in scoring by Forward #42 Ryan Leonard with 3 goals, and 3 assists.  Sixteen different players earned points for Team USA during Saturday's exhibition game.  Team USA outshot St Andrew's College 41-15.  St. Andrew's College is a university preparatory school located in Ontario, Canada. 

     The USA NTDP competes in the Eastern Conference of the USHL (United States Hockey League).  Team USA is currently in 8th place in the USHL Eastern Conference standings with 25 points, and an overall record of 11-17-3 (3 overtime losses).  The USA NTDP has played significantly less games than other teams in the Eastern Conference of the USHL.

The Joe On NHL Network




     "The Joe: The Detroit Red Wings & Joe Louis Arena" is an incredible film that can be seen from time to time on the NHL Network.  The Joe features comments from several former Detroit Red Wings including Alex Delvecchio, Sergei Fedorov, Gordie Howe, Nicklas Lidstrom, Ted Lindsay, Brendan Shanahan, and Henrik Zetterberg.  The Joe also includes comments from current Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill, Defenseman Danny DeKeyser, and General Manager Steve Yzerman.  Ken Daniels (TV play-by-play), Ken Kal (radio play-by-play), and Mickey Redmond (TV color commentator) are also featured in The Joe. 

     The Joe covers many topics throughout the hour and eleven-minute-long film including the construction of Joe Louis Arena, the "Dead Wings" era, the purchase of the franchise by Mike Ilitch, the draft pick of Steve Yzerman, the hiring of Scotty Bowman, "The Russian Five", the limousine accident, the rivalry with the Colorado Avalanche, and the teams that hoisted the Stanley Cup.  The Joe can also be seen on the NHL YouTube channel.

SPFL ON CBSSN

 



     Live 2021-2022 SPFL (Scottish Premier Football League) games can be seen on CBSSN (CBS Sports Network).  Today's doubleheader features Motherwell FC vs. Celtic FC at 8:30 a.m. followed by Rangers FC vs. Hearts (Heart of Midlothian FC) at 11:00 a.m.  Rangers FC won the 2020-2021 the Scottish Premiership Title.  Celtic FC won the seven previous Scottish Premiership Titles.  There are currently 12 teams competing in the top division of the Scottish Premier Football League.
