Eagles are Battle Tested!

The Eastern Michigan University basketball team will be battle tested as they get set for conference play in the MAC (Mid-American Conference).  The Eagles currently have an overall record of 7-5, but four of their five losses have come to nationally ranked schools.  Eastern Michigan suffered losses to #15 Kentucky 81-63 on November 27th, #23 Massachusetts 69-57 on December 3rd, #7 Duke 82-59 on December 28th, and #2 Syracuse 70-48 earlier today.  Eastern Michigan will host Rochester College this Saturday 2:00 p.m. for their final non-conference game of the regular season.  The Eagles begin MAC play on Wednesday, January 8th 7:00 p.m. at Bowling Green.
Eastern Michigan currently has three players averaging double digits in scoring including Karrington Ward with 14 points per game, Raven Lee 12 points per game, and Glenn Bryant with 10 points per game.  The Eagles have a post presence with 7'0 Da'Shonte Riley, and Mike Talley should add some depth in the backcourt.  The redshirt junior joins Eastern Michigan this season after transferring from Duquesne University. Talley's father was a star basketball player for the University of Michigan from 1990-1993, and Talley will be eligible to play for Eastern Michigan through next season.

Schwartz Fired!

Jim Schwartz was fired as head coach of the Detroit Lions yesterday, on what has become known as "Black Monday" throughout the NFL (National Football League).  Schwartz was responsible for a 29-51 record in five seasons with the Lions, and a late season collapse most certainly sealed the fate of the former head coach.  The Lions had a 6-3 record after nine games, and with key injuries to Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, and Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears, it appeared as if the Lions had a clear-cut path to the playoffs.  The Lions have plenty of talent on their roster, but they will not be a part of the postseason for the second straight year.  Jim Schwartz lead Detroit to the playoffs in 2011, but the Lions suffered a 45-28 loss at New Orleans in the first round.
Three other NFL head coaches were fired yesterday on "Black Monday" including Mike Shanahan (Washington Redskins), Leslie Frazier (Minnesota Vikings), and Greg Schiano (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).  On Sunday night, the Cleveland Browns relieved Rob Chudzinski of his head coaching duties after just one season.

Copp & Hartman For USA

#21 Ryan Hartman plays for the Plymouth Whalers, and is representing Team USA in the World Junior Championship!

The 2014 World Junior Championship is underway, and Team USA is looking to repeat as tournament champions.  Ryan Hartman (pictured above) plays for the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), and is representing Team USA for the second straight year.  Hartman played an important roll on the 2013 World Junior Championship Gold Medal team, scoring 2 goals in 7 games for Team USA.  Hartman has 13 goals, and 13 assists through 25 games with the Whalers this season.  During the 2012-2013 season, Hartman played 56 games for the Whalers scoring 23 goals, and adding 37 assists.  Hartman has already been drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL (National Hockey League).
Andrew Copp plays college hockey at the University of Michigan, and has also earned a spot on Team USA.  The left winger has already been drafted by the Winnipeg Jets of the NHL, and currently leads the Wolverines in scoring.  Copp has played 14 games for the Wolverines this season, and has 9 goals, with 5 assists.  During the 2012-2013 season, Copp played 52 games for the Wolverines scoring 20 goals, and adding 15 assists.
Connor Carrick played the 2012-2013 season with the Plymouth Whalers, and is also playing for Team USA.  Carrick has played most of this season with the Hershey Bears of the AHL (American Hockey League), but has seen time in the NHL with the Washington Capitals.  During the 2012-2013 season, Carrick played 68 games for the Whalers scoring 12 goals, and adding 32 assists.
Team USA is currently 3-0 in pool play with victories over Czech Republic (5-1 on December 26th), Slovakia (6-3 on December 28th), and Germany (8-0 this morning).  Team USA will play their next game on Tuesday (11:30 a.m.) against Canada.  The quarterfinals of the tournament will take place on January 2nd, the semifinals will be played January 4th, and the tournament will conclude with the Medal Games on January 5th.  The 2014 World Junior Championship is being played in Malmo, Sweden, and some games can be seen on the NHL Network.
Andrew Copp, Ryan Hartman, and Connor Carrick are all physical players that combine speed with the ability to score goals.  Team USA will lean on their experience, and rely on their production throughout their quest for another Gold Medal.

McGary Out!

The lineup for the University of Michigan basketball team will look much different in the upcoming weeks without the presence of Mitch McGary.  McGary will undergo back surgery to fix a nagging issue that has bothered him throughout the season.  McGary played a significant roll last season during the Wolverines run to the National Championship Final, and he was also selected by the Associated Press as a preseason All-American.  McGary missed the first two games of the season, and his back problem benched him again (on December 21st) against Stanford.  Al Horford, and Jordan Morgan are both likely to receive more minutes, along with an increased work load.
The Michigan Wolverines currently have an overall record of 7-4.  Three of their four losses were to ranked teams such as #13 Iowa State 77-70, #9 Duke 79-69, and #1 Arizona 72-70.  The Wolverines other loss was to Charlotte 63-61 in Puerto Rico.  Michigan will play their final non-conference game tonight (6:30), at the Crisler Arena against Holy Cross.

PASL in Melvindale!

This photo does not depict professional indoor soccer.  The rink, and turf style are similar to the pro levels.

The Detroit Rockers, the Detroit Neon, and the Detroit Ignition have all come and gone, but the Detroit Metro area does have another professional indoor soccer team, and they are known as the Detroit Waza Flo.  The Detroit Waza roster consists of players from all around the globe including Brazil, Kenya, and the United States.  The Waza compete in the PASL (Professional Arena Soccer League), and play their home games at the Melvindale Ice Arena.  The PASL consists of 20 teams from the United States, and Mexico.  There are three divisions in the PASL, and the Detroit Waza compete in the Eastern Division, along with five other teams.  The Waza won the Eastern Division in the 2011-2012 season, and again in the 2012-2013 season.  The Waza won 2013 U.S. Open Cup Championship when they defeated the San Diego Sockers 7-6 in the finals.
The Melvindale Ice Arena is located at 4300 S. Dearborn Street, in Melvindale.  The Detroit Waza are currently in third place in the Eastern Division with an overall record of 3-4.  The Waza are at home tomorrow night (7:05) to take on the Cincinnati Saints.  The Cincinnati Saints are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Division, with an overall record of 2-4.
Click on the links below for more information about the Detroit Waza, the PASL, or the Melvindale Ice Arena.  Do you think the Detroit Waza will remain in Melvindale for years to come?  You can always leave a comment, and you can email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com  Check out the Mitten State Sports Report's archived material to see photos from local indoor soccer games.

Morris Will Start For Gardner!

Devin Gardner will not play for the University of Michigan tomorrow night in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.  True freshman Shane Morris will replace the injured Gardner at quarterback when the Wolverines take the field against Kansas State.  It is believed that Gardner was injured during the teams 42-41 loss to Ohio State, and he may be suffering from fractured bones in his foot.  Shane Morris attempted 9 passes for the Wolverines this season, and went 5-9 with 65 yards, and an interception.
Taylor Lewan is one of several people being investigated for an altercation that took place on November 30th, at "The Brown Jug Restaurant" in Ann Arbor.  Lewan was recently interviewed by police, but has not been arrested or charged.  Lewan will play for the Wolverines tomorrow night, and the senior offensive lineman is projected to be a first round pick in the upcoming NFL (National Football League) draft.
The Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl takes place in Tempe, Arizona, and can be seen tomorrow night (10:15 p.m.) on ESPN.  The Michigan Wolverines finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record, but recorded a 3-5 record in the Big-10 Conference.  The Wolverines have lost four out of their last five games.  The Kansas State Wildcats finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record, and accumulated a 5-4 record in the Big-12 Conference.  The Wildcats have lost five straight Bowl games.

Will MSU Win the Rose Bowl?

Many people are uncertain whether or not Michigan State will defeat Stanford in the 100th Rose Bowl.

The Michigan State football team is preparing for a Rose Bowl battle against Stanford University, on January 1st.  The Spartans are playing in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1988, and this year marks the event's 100th year anniversary.  The Stanford Cardinal won the PAC-12 Conference, and finished the regular season with an 11-2 record.  Their two losses were at Utah 27-21, and at USC (University of Southern California) 20-17.  Michigan State won the Big-10 Conference, and finished the regular season with a 12-1 record.  The Spartans only loss this season came on the road against Notre Dame 17-13.
Max Bullough was suspended from the team late last night for violation of team rules.  Bullough is a senior middle linebacker, and is a captain on the team.  Head Coach Mark Dantonio issued a statement, but did not go into detail about the incident.  Bullough made 76 tackles this season, and is considered to be the heart, and sole of the Spartans defense.  His presence will certainly be missed in Pasadena.

Pistons Are Improving!

The Pistons have a 13-14 overall record, and have moved into 5th place in the Eastern Conference standings.  Detroit defeated the Boston Celtics 107-106 last night, but the 12-15 Celtics are still leading a weak Atlantic Division, where the 9-14 Toronto Raptors are just a game out of first place.  If the NBA (National Basketball Association) Playoffs started today, the Pistons would be matched up against Boston in the first round, with the Celtics having home court advantage.  Last nights win at Boston was huge for Detroit, and they seem to be improving their team chemistry.  Everyone is doing their part for the Pistons, and so far Detroit is the only team in the NBA to win at Indiana, and at Miami.  The Chicago Bulls have rapidly fallen out of contention after the Derek Rose injury, and the Eastern Conference is not as strong as it's been in recent years.  It's certainly not as strong as the Western Conference is this year.  Even though the Pistons are playing good basketball, they are still eight games behind the Indiana Pacers (20-5) for first place in the Central Division.
Have you seen the "Dance Cam" battles taking place during Pistons home games?  It started a couple of weeks ago at a Pistons home game, when the dancing usher at the Palace of Auburn Hills was caught on the "Dance Cam", in a dance off, against a young fan.  The famous usher, and his dancing partner have since been featured on "Jimmy Kimmel Live", "Fox 2 News", and several other media outlets.  The two growing stars have also combined to make more "Dance Cam" videos at Pistons home games.  Click on the link below to see the "Dance Cam" battles, or to check out current Pistons stats, and standings.
