The Taylor Sportsplex was the venue for ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) hockey last Sunday afternoon. The John Carroll University Blue Streaks brought their 6-5 record to Taylor to take on the 5-6 Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Eastern Michigan was playing their third game in three consecutive days, and failed to score against the Blue Streaks on Sunday. Both teams were held scoreless until midway through the second period when #20 Kevin Vinyard found the back of the net to give the Blue Steaks an early lead. John Carroll scored another goal about a minute later when #21 Mike Gionta cashed in on the power play. #17 Jeff Russell added two more goals to the scoreboard (1 in the 2nd period, and 1 in the 3rd period) to give John Carroll the 4-0 win over Eastern Michigan. The Eagles outshot the Blue Streaks 40-35, but took bad penalties, and allowed John Carroll to work the puck in the EMU zone, and take quality shots on goal. John Carroll improved their overall record to 7-5 (with two overtime wins, and one shootout loss). Eastern Michigan fell to 5-7 overall (with one overtime win).
John Carroll University competes in Division 1 of the ACHA, and is placed in the CHMA (College Hockey Mid-America) Conference along with seven other Universities. The Blue Streaks are currently in second place in the CHMA standings with 20 points. Eastern Michigan University also competes in Division 1 of the ACHA, and plays in the GLCHL (Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League) along with six other schools. The Eagles are currently in 4th place in the GLCHL standings with 17 points. There are currently 57 Colleges, and Universities competing in Division 1 of the ACHA.
