Junior Hockey In Mt. Clemens!

The MWJHL is expanding for next season!  The MC Monarchs will join the league, and play out of Mount Clemens!

The MWJHL (Midwest Junior Hockey League) is expanding for next season, and the league will now include 8 teams for the 2014-2015 season.  The MC Monarchs will be the newest franchise in the MWJHL, and the club will play their home games at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena.  Three High Schools currently play out of the Mount Clemens Ice Arena (De La Salle Collegiate High School, Dakota High School, and L'Anse Creuse North High School), so the Monarchs may not have to look very far to acquire talent.  It is unclear at this time whether the MC stands for the city of Mount Clemens, or Macomb County, but the junior hockey franchise should bring some excitement to an area thirsty for amateur sports. The MC Monarchs have not yet announced their coaching staff, and their official website has not yet been launched.  Click on  www.mwjhl.com  for more information about the MC Monarchs, or the Midwest Junior Hockey League!
The 2013-2014 MWJHL Championship kicked off last night, and the chance to hoist the Veteran's Memorial Cup is on the line.  The Traverse City Hounds are hosting the Soo Firehawks at Centre Ice Arena, in a best of three game series that will decide this years MWJHL Champion.  Traverse City is scheduled to host all three games of the series, but the Soo Firehawks can wrap it up tonight with a victory.  The Firehawks upset the Hounds 3-2 in game 1 last night, and the Soo now have a stranglehold on the series.  Game 2 is scheduled for tonight at 7:00, and game 3 (if necessary) is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
The Traverse City Hounds finished the MWJHL regular season in 1st place with 67 points, and an overall record of 32-10 (1 overtime loss, and 2 shootout losses).  The Soo Firehawks finished up the regular season in 2nd place with 63 points, and an overall record of 31-11 (1 shootout loss).  Click on the links below for more information about the Soo Firehawks, the Traverse City Hounds, Centre Ice Arena, or the Mount Clemens Ice Arena.  You can always leave a comment, and you can email the Mitten State Sports Report directly at mittenstatesportsreport@rocketmail.com  Click on past months to check out exclusive photos from some Midwest Junior Hockey League games.

Spartans Have Another Gibby!

#30 Cam Gibson's father is Kirk Gibson!

The Michigan State Spartans have become familiar in acquiring talent directly related to athletes that played in our local area.  Dean, and Jake Chelios both skated for the Spartans hockey team this past season, and both of them probably received plenty of hockey pointers from their father Chris Chelios.  The Spartans baseball team is featuring another son of a former pro, but sophomore sensation #30 Cam Gibson may be better known as just a really good baseball player, by the time his college career is over.
#30 Cam Gibson is the staring left fielder for the Spartans baseball team this year, and Gibson has started all twenty games so far this season.  Gibson has 78 at bats, and is averaging .282, with 1 HR (home run), and 6 RBI's (runs batted in).  Gibson leads the Spartans in hits with 22, in walks with 11, and in triples with 3. As a freshman last season, Gibson started 40 games, and compiled an impressive batting average of .325.  Gibson was named to the Big 10 Conference All Freshman team last season, and has already been named as a Big 10 Conference Player to Watch in 2014.
Kirk Gibson is the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and is Cam Gibson's father.  The Diamondbacks drafted Cam Gibson in the 38th round (#1173 overall) of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, but Gibson decided to attend Michigan State University.  Kirk Gibson was a star baseball, and football player during his time at Michigan State, and Cam Gibson is certainly on the path to a long, and successful Major League Baseball career.
The Michigan State University baseball team currently has an overall record of 10-10, and a Big Ten Conference record of 1-2.  The Spartans are scheduled to play their home opener on April 2nd, (3:05) against Oakland University.  The Spartans will travel across town the following day for an exhibition game against the Lansing Lugnuts.  The Lugnuts are a professional baseball team, and are the single "A" affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.  This season, the Michigan State baseball team will host Big 10 Conference rivals such as Purdue University, Northwestern University, and Nebraska University.
Kirk Gibson played for the Detroit Tigers from 1983-1987, and was a television analyst for the Tigers from 1998-1992.  Gibson served on the Detroit Tigers coaching staff as both a bench coach, and a hitting coach from 2003-2005.   Kirk Gibson currently manages the Arizona Diamondbacks, and in 2011 was named National League Manager of the Year.

College Baseball vs. Mother Nature

Papp Park in Taylor is home to the Henry Ford Community College baseball team. The field is not ready to host games.

The college baseball season in the state of Michigan has been at the mercy of Mother Nature, and despite the official arrival of Spring, all levels of baseball are being affected by the cold weather.  Games scheduled in March are usually dicey, but this years record breaking snow totals, combined with the record breaking temperatures have created impossible conditions for baseball.  Several games throughout different levels of college baseball have already been postponed, or cancelled all together. Teams from the Midwest face many disadvantages in the current college baseball structure, and scheduling issues provide one more challenge for schools located in the state of Michigan.
College baseball in the Midwest has been labeled throughout the South, and West as being of a lesser quality, but the top teams in the Midwest can play against anybody.  Sometimes the Conferences from the Midwest such as the Big 10, and the MAC (Mid-American Conference) aren't loaded from top to bottom, but there is definitely talent, and parody in the Midwest, and throughout the landscape of college baseball.
Every season, schools from the Midwest send their baseball programs down south to play almost the first half of their season on the road.  When the teams return to their campuses, the weather is still cold, and teams are forced to sit around while games are postponed, or cancelled all together.  Players avoid live ball action, and then play half of their remaining games on the road.  Several double headers are plugged into the schedule to make up for the games affected by rain, and the weather for the remaining games resembles December football weather, as opposed to baseball weather in the Spring.
Scroll down to see a list of some college games that have already been cancelled, or postponed due to the cold weather.  Click on the links below for more information about NCAA Division 1 Baseball, NCAA Division 2 Baseball, the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), or the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association).

Bader Is Built For The NBA

Travis Bader put up incredible numbers during his four year career at Oakland University!

Travis Bader may, or may not be on the radar of NBA (National Basketball Association) scouts, but I'm here to tell you that Travis Bader's game transfers well at the next level.  Travis Bader just finished up a four year career at Oakland University, and put up incredible record breaking numbers.  Bader averaged more then 20 points per game during both his junior, and season seasons.  In 2012-2013 Bader lead all of Division 1 in 3 point field goals made.  This season, Bader lead the Nation in free throw percentage (94%), cashing in on 164 of 174 attempts.  Bader also holds the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 record for career three pointers made with 504.  Bader accumulated over 2000 career points, over 100 career steals, and over 500 three point field goals made, in 137 college games.  Just by looking at the numbers alone, Bader seems like a sure fit for the NBA, and should find himself on an NBA roster next season.
With the constant erosion of fundamentals displayed in college, and professional basketball, it's refreshing to see a guy who can shoot, and score from anywhere in the gym, can get to the free throw line on a consistent basis, and can actually cash in on his free throw attempts.  Travis Bader's 6'5 frame also allows him the ability to grab rebounds, and his 38 minutes per game average during his junior, and senior seasons proves that he's a durable player.  Every team, in every level of basketball needs a guy who can fill it up consistently.  The NBA is no different, and Travis Bader could literally come to any team in the league, and provide an immediate impact.

March Madness: Local Preview

March Madness is officially underway, and this years NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) tournament features three schools from the state of Michigan.  Compare that to the state of Indiana, which currently has 10 Division 1 schools competing in the NCAA, but zero teams qualifying for the 68 team tournament.  The University of Michigan Wolverines, and the Michigan State Spartans were expecting to be playing for a National Championship; but the Western Michigan Broncos have also made the tournament, and could be the "Cinderella Story" if they manage to win a couple of games, and make it to the "Sweet 16".
The Michigan Wolverines won the regular season Big 10 Championship, have earned themselves a #2 seed in the Midwest Region.  The Wolverines have an overall record of 25-8, and will face #15 Wofford College, tonight (7:10 p.m.), on CBS.  Wofford competes in the Southern Conference, and they have an overall record of 20-12.  If the Wolverines advance tonight, they'll face the winner of #7 Texas vs. #10 Arizona State, on Saturday.
The Michigan State University basketball team won the Big 10 Tournament, and have earned themselves a #4 seed in the East Region.  The Spartans have an overall record of 26-8, and will face #13 University of Delaware, later this afternoon (4:40 p.m.), on TNT.  Delaware competes in the Colonial Athletic Conference, and they have an overall record of 25-9.  If the Spartans advance, they'll face the winner of #5 Cincinnati vs. #12 Harvard, on Saturday.
The Western Michigan Broncos won the MAC (Mid-American Conference) Tournament Championship, and have earned themselves a #14 seed in the South Region.  The Broncos have an overall record of 23-9, and will face #3 Syracuse University, this afternoon (2:45 p.m.), on CBS.  Syracuse competes in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), and they have an overall record of 27-5.  If the Broncos advance, they'll face the winner of #6 Ohio State vs. #11 Dayton, on Saturday.
