2015 Plymouth Ice Fest

Tony Pertile, from the "Mitten State Sports Report", was in downtown Plymouth for the 2015 Plymouth Ice Festival.

     The 2015 Plymouth Ice Festival took place from January 9th through January 11th, and the Mitten State Sports Report was in downtown Plymouth to take in all of the action.  This years festival featured a Dueling chainsaw competition on Saturday, and college carving competitions throughout the weekend.   There was even a cross country skiing display.  The weather was ideal for the ice sculptures, and a few hundred thousand people are estimated to have attended this years festival.  Click on plymouthicefestival.com for more information about the Plymouth Ice Festival.  Click on www.downtownplymouth.org  for information about other events happening in Plymouth.

Kellogg Park was filled with ice sculptures!

The ice sculptures were on display all weekend.  Visitors came at all hours to see the artwork.

The ice sculptures were lit up at night.

There was a Dueling chainsaw competition.  There were also college carving competitions throughout the weekend.

The Plymouth Ice Festival comes to downtown Plymouth once a year.

Plymouth vs. North Bay

On January 9th, the Plymouth Whalers (in blue) defeated the North Bay Battalion 6-3.  Scroll down to see exclusive photos.

     The Plymouth Whalers compete in the Western Conference of the (OHL) Ontario Hockey League, and play in the West Division.  The Whalers are currently in 5th place in the West Division standings with 31 points, and an overall record of 14-27 (2 overtime losses, and 1 shootout loss).  Click on the link below for more information about the Plymouth Whalers.
     On January 9th, the Plymouth Whalers defeated the North Bay Battalion 6-3 at Compuware Arena.  Scroll down to check out exclusive photos of the Whalers victory.  The Plymouth Whalers currently have seven players that have been selected by NHL (National Hockey League) teams.  Alex Nedeljkovic, and Josh Wesley have been drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes.  Alex Peters has been drafted by the Dallas Stars, Connor Chatham has been drafted by the New Jersey Devils, Victor Crus Rydberg (VCR) has been drafted by the New York Islanders, Matt Mistele has been drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, and Sonny Milano has been drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Click on the links below for more information about the Ontario Hockey League, or Compuware Arena.

The Plymouth Whalers (in blue) hosted the North Bay Battalion.  The game was played on January 9th, at Compuware Arena.  

 

The game was physical.  There were plenty of fights.

The North Bay Battalion celebrated 3 goals against the Plymouth Whalers.  

#12 Brett McKenzie had a conversation with an official.  

#23 Nick Moutrey has already been drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

#17 Ryan Kujawinski has already been drafted by the New Jersey Devils.

The Plymouth Whalers celebrated a 6-3 victory over the North Bay Battalion.

Michigan vs. Detroit

On December 19th, the Detroit Fighting Irish (in green) defeated the Michigan Ice Dogs (in white) 6-3.

     The Michigan Ice Dogs, and the Detroit Fighting Irish both compete against each other in the MWJHL (Midwest Junior Hockey League).  The Fighting Irish are currently in 3rd place in the MWJHL standings with 45 points, and an overall record of 31-10 (1 overtime loss, and 2 shootout losses).  The Fighting Irish play all of their home games at the Ice Box.  The Ice Box is located on 21902 Telegraph Road, in Brownstown Township. UofM-D Basketball

The University of Michigan Dearborn basketball team currently has a 6-13 overall record.

     The University of Michigan Dearborn men's basketball team competes in Division II of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), and the Wolverines play in the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference).  The school was formerly known as the Wolves, but was switched to the Wolverines at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.  The Wolverines of Dearborn are currently 3-9 in the WHAC, and the team has an overall record of 6-13.

The game was played on December 6th, 2014.  The Wolverines hosted the Mustangs in Dearborn.

The Wolverines defeated the Mustangs 86-81.

Monarchs Hockey

The MC Monarchs (in white) are in 2nd place in the MWJHL standings with 48 points, and an overall record of 24-10.

     The MWJHL (Midwest Junior Hockey League) includes 7 junior hockey teams from our local area.  The Traverse City Hounds have dominated the league for three seasons, but the expansion of the league has created some serious competition. The MC Monarchs are playing their 1st season in the Midwest Junior Hockey league, and they currently find themselves in 2nd place in the MWJHL standings with 48 points, and an overall record of 24-10.  The MC Monarchs play all of their home games at Fraser Hockeyland located on 34400 Utica Road.

Blue Devils Basketball

The Lawrence Tech University men's basketball team currently has a 4-16 overall record. 

     The Lawrence Tech University men's basketball team competes in Division II of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), and the Blue Devils play in the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference).  The Blue Devils currently have an overall record of 4-14, and the team is 1-11 in the WHAC.
     On December 3rd, 2014, the Blue Devils lost a 55-52 nail-biter to the University of Northwestern Ohio. Henry Ford Hoops

The Henry Ford Hawks currently have a 5-8 overall record.

      The Henry Ford Community College basketball team competes in Division II of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association), and the Hawks play in the MCCAA (Michigan Community College Athletic Association) Conference.  The Hawks are currently in 9th place in the MCCAA standings with an 0-3 Conference record, and an overall record of 5-8.  Henry Ford started the season off strong, but the Hawks are currently riding a five game losing streak.

Gong Show vs. Bruins

The Gong Show (in black) faced off against the Bruins (in yellow).  The game was played on November 24th, 2014.

Both teams compete in the Eds Hockey over 50 league.  They play at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

The Gong Show battled the Bruins on the NHL (National Hockey League) style ice rink.  

The Gong Show currently find themselves in 2nd place in the Eds Hockey over 50 league with an 11-8-1 overall record.

Devils vs. Millionaires

The Devils (in white) faced off against the Millionaires (in green).  The game was played on November 24th, 2014.

Both teams compete in the Eds Hockey over 50 league.  They play at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.  

The Devils are currently in 1st place in the Eds Hockey over 50 league with 27 points, and an overall record of 12-5-3.

The Devils battled the Millionaires on an Olympic style ice rink.  Compuware Arena also has a NHL style ice rink.

Eds Hockey Over 50

Eds Hockey is an adult recreational hockey league that has separate leagues for different age groups.

     Eds Hockey has been featured several times on the Mitten State Sports Report, and different age groups have been profiled.  Eds Hockey is an adult recreational hockey league based in Southeast Michigan, and the over 50 division plays at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.  The teams meet late on Monday, and Wednesday evenings, and the players have access to both ice rinks at Compuware Arena.
     Compuware Arena has a NHL (National Hockey League) style rink used by the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers, and an Olympic style rink used by the Detroit Catholic Central High School hockey team.
