On Saturday night, the University of Michigan Dearborn hockey team defeated Eastern Michigan University 9-2. |
The game was close for awhile on Saturday night, but the third period got away from Eastern Michigan University during a lobsided 9-2 finish at the Taylor Sportsplex. #22 Jase Paciocco gave the Wolverines a 3-2 lead at the 17:17 mark of the second period, and the University of Michigan Dearborn hockey team never looked back. #21 Anthony Olson scored just 1:10 into the third period to increase the lead to 4-2, and #22 Jase Paciocco cashed in on a penalty shot attempt to make it 5-2. #22 Paciocco added a goal later in the third period to complete the hat trick. #9 Ryan Kelly also achieved a hat trick for the Wolverines, and his two third period goals were sandwiched by a #71 Gino Darin goal. Eastern Michigan University made a goalie switch after Kelly's second goal, and replaced #31 Andrew Duff with #1 Brian Ellis. The substitution made no difference however, as the Eagles allowed three more goals after the switch. The Wolverines defeated Eastern Michigan 9-2, capping off a two game weekend sweep over the Eagles. The University of Michigan Dearborn hockey club also defeated Eastern Michigan 5-4 on Friday night (in Dearborn), and both teams will meet again for another weekend series on Friday, February 14th, (at the Taylor Sportsplex), and on Saturday, February 15th, (at the field house in Dearborn). Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Both schools compete in Division 1 of the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association), and the two programs are conference rivals in the GLCHL (Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League). Saturday nights game was very heated, and several players were ejected including #22 Bobby Gasser, and #8 Jacob Harbowy from Eastern Michigan. The game was played at the Taylor Sportsplex which is home to the Eastern Michigan hockey team, but the location of the arena is actually closer to Dearborn. The Wolverine fans showed up in force, and there was even a few tense moments in the stands. A rink official had to step in between a couple of spectators, and one of the Wolverine faithful kept shouting at the linesman (Mercer), and got into a third period chirping match with an Eagles player (#12 Nick Taurence). Whether your a student, an alumni, or just a fan of hockey, be sure to get down to a rink, and check out the next chapter of this rivalry when it resumes in two weeks.
